In 1986, Beechworth was still an emerging wine region. However, Barry and Jan Morey recognised its potential and began planting their winery, Sorrenberg. Rather than relying on excessive manipulation or trendy winemaking techniques, the Moreys prioritised the health of their vines and the soil.

Barry and Jan have consistently advocated for biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. Although they faced challenges in the early days, they now believe that the care and effort they dedicated to the land are being rewarded. This long-term commitment to the ecosystem has resulted in consistently delicious wines with genuine character. It's no surprise that Sorrenberg has developed a loyal following. "The earlier release of this wine over past years has had me a little skittish vis-a-vis showing the best without the extra time in bottle, but this year seems to have found requisite texture, savouriness and depth in its youth. Good news.

I think there is way more to come from this wine, but the slip of nougat and gentle malo-esque feeling of creamy softness works well with the perky slosh of pulpy grapefruit and saline minerality that underscores the wine. On top, and to sniff on, pine-lime Splice, hazy green apple juice, faint pickled ginger, a little pine resin character and that skeletal feel of cooling saline veins through it all. It’s even, balanced and flows beautfully, with a gulpability that is a winner. No brainer."

2024 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

"It’s definitely one of the leaner releases of this wine but in that you get to say ‘finesse’ and ‘precise’ over things that mean complexity and depth and similar. And in that not so much of an issue. You stack this up against other fine wine white blends, apex chardonnay, top flight riesling and it holds its own. And then some. It’s beautiful in its understatement, sleek lines, compact nature, refreshing feel, all lightweight stone fruits, faint green almond, halva, delicate alpine herbs. A pucker, gentle, lends shape, some pluck and sinew of grip through the finish. It made me think of all the top flight wine I love, and though in a more modest feel, I still couldn’t help but think how damn good this is. And how damn elegant. And refreshing and delicious and moreish. Fairy dust on that vineyard and winery."

2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

"A blend that consists of 30–40% merlot and cabernet franc, with a touch of malbec, petit verdot, carménère, then the balance is of cabernet sauvignon. A complex motif! The wine is complex, too, yet sleek and elegant in the same statement. Almost a kind of pinosity in texture and weight, though fine, silty tannins shape things long and to a fine, succulent point. Dark cherry, brambly blackberries, a lick of toasty clove and cinnamon, undergrowth and truffle savouriness underlying. A subtle, saline and graphite minerality makes landfall, too. Finesse, in spades."

"Maybe not so much like a Cabernet, in a way more like a Beaujolais/Cabernet cross over. It’s supple and succulent, red fruit, honey and ginger biscuits, a whiff of paprika, lovely perfume with it. There’s medium-bodied appeal, a gloss and glide of silky red fruit, nutty too, a subtle ripe blood orange and mixed peel flavour, a stony ‘mineral’ feel, spicy with poached strawberry to close on a finish of satisfying length. Unreal. Different and so bloody tasty. I love it."
