Lake's Folly

Lake's Folly is widely recognized as one of Australia's most unique and distinguished vineyards. Established by Doctor Max Lake in 1963 as Australia's first boutique vineyard, it produces wines in small volumes of the highest quality. The new releases of their Chardonnay and red blend are now available. However, due to unfavourable weather conditions in 2022, their Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, which is typically the major component of their flagship wine, didn't meet their standards and was therefore excluded from the blend. Only a small quantity of this wine is available, so it is recommended that you place your order soon to avoid missing out.

2023 Chardonnay

"A 100% estate-grown chardonnay from the original plantings on the flat. It is an unashamedly bolder, riper style and an excellent example of its type. The juice from crushed fruit begins fermentation in a tank before being transferred to French barriques of mixed age for completion, followed by eight-month maturation on lees. The result is a wildly concentrated, satisfying wine with clotted cream, peach and lemon cheesecake layers encasing an intense grapefruit core. The fruit weight and oak are synchronised, and integrated acidity elevates the flavours and elongates the finish."

2022 Red Blend

"A first for Lake's Folly, this year's Red is a blend of Shiraz 47%, Merlot 34%, and Petit Verdot 19%...The finished result: a unique, unprecedented blend - a cracking wine (albeit without our usual Cabernet component), though in very limited quantities this release!

The fruit is open-fermented producing softer, more subtle tannins, and then transferred to large format casks for six months for settling, and then into small French oak barriques (new, one, and two-year-old) for approximately one year before bottling. Bright, lifted fruits of mulberries and hints of cedary oak. This wine is clean and vibrant with lovely richness from generous fruits; again, mulberries dominate the palate. Wonderful balance, perfect supporting French oak and fine-grained tannins – yum! Lovely as a young wine, though should also imagine it as a great 10+ years prospect - even without its typical Cabernet component."

2021 Cabernets

"Cherry, raspberry, a fair amount of perfume, a little aniseed and almond, cedar and spice. Medium-bodied, crisp red fruits, subtle tobacco/earthiness, light cedar oak, tannin is also light, but sure-footed, and the finish is long and fresh. So charming. Such a lovely thing to drink. Distinctive too."
