    New Chapter - Guy Charlemagne

    by Hugh French | Jul 26, 2024

    Guy Charlemagne

We are very excited to receive our latest allocation of the always excellent (and great value) wines from Champagne Guy Charlemagne. Changes are a foot at this House, with Philippe Charlemagne handing over the reigns to his two daughters, Maree and Justine, Maree with a background in viticulture and winemaking, Justine with a commercial background. The daughters will be taking a measured approach to changes over the coming years, and given the extended lees ageing most of the wines receive, we’re unlikely to see the results of these changes for some time. But it is fair to say there is a new energy in the house and we are very excited to continue our partnership with the family.

But first, a little history. The House was founded by Guy Charlemagne himself in 1892, based in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Champagne Guy Charlemagne has remained a family affair, with several generations inheriting Guy’s passion for the terroirs of the Côte des Blancs. The Côte des Blancs terroir is at the heart of Champagne Guy Charlemagne’s identity. The vineyards cover almost 18 hectares, mainly located in villages classified as Grand Cru, including Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Cramant. The chalky terroir of Côte des Blancs is particularly well-suited to the cultivation of the Chardonnay grape variety (around 87% of the House’s harvest is Chardonnay), enabling the production of Champagnes of great elegance and characteristic freshness. They are a mainstay in our cellars and we can’t recommend them highly enough, especially at the price.

    NV Guy Charlemagne Brut Classic
    Usually $89 - Special Offer $75

“From the chalky-clay terroir of Sezanne, the brut champagne is a blend of 50% Chardonnay & 50% Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir brings body & structure, whereas Chardonnay adds finesse & elegance. Vinified in thermo-regulated stainless steel and matured for two years in our underground cellars then blend with significant reserve wine. It is a highly pleasurable champagne with balance.”
    Winery Notes

NV Guy Charlemagne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Reserve
    Usually $114 - Special Offer $95

“The Reserve Brut cuvée is from the Le Mesnil sur Oger and Oger, Côte des Blancs terroir, both with their limestone soils. This brut champagne is made solely with Chardonnay from our 100% Grand Crus. A champagne where lightness and finesse play the lead role, made from a reserve wine blend and light dosage at around 8 grams per litre. This gives it longevity and subtle aromas. Vinified in thermos-regulated stainless steel and matured between two and three years in our underground cellars, the Cuvée Reserve Brut is a harmonious wine, wholesome, full-bodied with very mineral aromas.“
    Winery Notes.

    NV Guy Charlemagne Brut Rose
    Usually $124 - Special Offer $105

“This Champagne is made with our vineyards from Mancy and Cuis, with a chalky-clay soil. It is produced 100% from Pinot Noir. Its colour is obtained by macerating the grapes with the juice, giving it the colour typical of « rosé de saignée ». Its nose is particularly marked by red berry notes. Vinified in thermo regulated stainless steel and matured 2 years in our underground cellars.”

2015 Guy Charlemagne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvee Charlemagne ‘Les Coulmets’

“This cuvée from the Côte des Blancs, more precisely from the parcel Les Coulmets in Mesnil sur Oger and Oger with limestone soil, is only made in the best vintages. This 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay is selected on a pure vintage with unique freshness and delicacy. Harvested in our best plots, Cuvée CHARLEMAGNE is only produced with tête de cuvée Chardonnay and vinified in thermos-regulated stainless steel. A very light dosage, 5 grams per liter, and matured for 6 years in our chalk underground cellars, this vintage champagne shows extreme finesse. Winery Notes

2015 Guy Charlemagne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru ‘Mesnillesime’ V.V
    Usually $259 - Special Offer $215

“A Grand Champagne with character from the Côte des Blancs terroir, specifically from Le Mesnil sur Oger (limestone parcels averaging 60 years of age). This champagne produced from first press of Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru juices, highlights the exact characteristic of our village. Jewel of the Charlemagne house, this vintage wine combines both authenticity and the search for perfect quality. This Mesnillésime cuvée is produced with rigorous vinification, partially in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, and a very light dosage of 4 grams per liter. Matured for 6 years in our chalk underground cellars, this cuvée highlights the excellence of our production. Chardonnay, the only grape here, shows what balance, harmony and purity can mean. A rare champagne for unforgettable moments.”
