  • Domaine Bruno Clair

In 1919, Joseph Clair, originally from Santenay, married Marguerite Daü, who worked in the vineyards of Marsannay-la-Côte. Over the following decades, Joseph Clair expanded his family's vineyard holdings significantly. From 1930 to 1960, he acquired vines in prestigious locations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, including the renowned Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze and Les Cazetiers, as well as Morey-Saint-Denis, where he cultivated Bonnes-Mares, and Chambolle-Musigny.

In 1954, Joseph, together with his wife, sister-in-law, and three children, founded the CLAIR-DAÜ estate. During the 1950s and 1960s, his son Bernard Clair and daughter-in-law Geneviève Bartet continued the family's winemaking legacy by adding to their holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin (including Clos-Saint-Jacques and Clos du Fonteny), Vosne-Romanée, Savigny-les-Beaune (notably La Dominode), and Marsannay. After Joseph's death in 1971, Bernard took charge of the estate's management.

However, by 1985, internal disagreements led to a division of the estate. The partners split the vines, with Bernard and Geneviève entrusting their share to Bruno. This allowed Bruno to develop his own estate alongside his brother Michel and sisters Anne, Aleth, and Agnès, establishing a family-run business. From 1986 to 2019, the Bruno Clair estate encompassed 17 hectares across several villages, including Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Vosne-Romanée, and Savigny-Les-Beaune. The family seized numerous opportunities to expand their holdings, acquiring land in Chambolle-Musigny in 1990, Aloxe-Corton (including Corton-Charlemagne) and Pernand-Vergelesses in 1993, additional vines in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1996, and gradually acquiring Bonnes-Mares from 2006. In 2019, they added a plot in Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes.

In 2005, Isabelle, Bruno’s wife, joined the estate to manage its administrative and commercial operations and enhance customer relations. Their children became involved in the family business as well, with Edouard joining in 2010 and Margaux and Arthur following in 2018. Each sibling has taken on distinct roles in the estate's operations: Edouard oversees the vines and the vinification process, Margaux is responsible for shipping while also contributing to vineyard management, and Arthur handles the cellar and vinification alongside Edouard.
