Adam Foster's Garden of Earthly Delights & Syrahmi

 

 

Adam Foster has worn many hats, all of which seemed to point him towards wine. After working as a chef and later as a Sommelier, he wanted to create something for himself so, in 2004 he started Syrahmi. The inspiration for Syrahmi is very much Rhone Valley varietals in and around the Heathcote region where Adam and his family now reside. Also under Adam's winemaking umbrella is Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Riesling which he makes under the Garden of Earthly Delights label. These are small in production and offer great aromatic profiles and structure. If you haven't tried one of Adam's wines before you're really missing out.

Riesling

From Adam Foster, chef-turned-winemaker and now farmer-winemaker, amongst many talents. Here’s his rendition of riesling, and from the somewhat unlikely place of Heathcote (Merindoc-Shelmerdine vineyard). A portion is produced in ceramic egg with the remainder raised on lees, to build texture, in tank.

Nebbiolo

Dried roses, cherry cola, sweet earth and hedge row. Tense and taut to taste, tarry tannins, rose water and sour cherry, clove spice and a sense of ferrous earthiness. Quite plush around the ridge of tannins, a bigger flavour profile in a way, despite hitting medium weight on the dial. Pleasing expression.

Sangiovese

This is excellent in any language. Bloody scents, fresh kill, game meat, dried rose petals, faint camp fire notes, fennel and rosemary lifting things. Supple but dark fruited flavours, some chocolate, game meat again too, stretching luxuriously, silky tannins building gently to a fine pucker to close. Acidity is bright and fresh. The wine is so very drinkable, charming, detailed and gluggable. Thanks, Adam.

Amazing perfume. Amazing. Couldn’t stop sniffing it. Exotic spice, cola, sarsaparilla, dried fruits, mahogany, cherry. A riot of flavour, so much intensity and layers and layers of spice and dried fruits and woody things. Nothing out of balance. Incredible tannin profile and this seam of bright, orange-y acidity. Blood orange to close. Such a complex and structured wine. Just epic. Don’t want to taste any more today, I’m just drinking this.

2019 Syrahmi La Bise
Marsanne Roussanne

This is a full hit of flavour and texture, supple in the palate, creamy, rich, laden with pasty-textured nuttiness, vanilla licks and cinnamon spice. There’s deep pear and ripe apple flavours too, and, importantly, a bright vein of acidity just tingling away inside it all. It feels decadent and yet well-balanced in all its opulence. It’s quite something to sip on now and should yield interesting/good results with modest cellaring. It pushes sweetness/ripeness/hedonism a little out of balance, perhaps, if looking at it more technically, but so many will run to this for its generosity and complex delivery of wine.

2018 Syrahmi XV Shiraz

Dark and deep brick red, a riot of perfume encompassing ripe wild blackberries, violets, baked red earth, black pepper and dried thyme. Smoked meats/charcuterie, bergamot tea and black olive create a sense of excitement and wonderous joy.
Complex, dense weighted palate with intense energy. Lifted perfumes of black olive tapenade, smoked meats with compounded black fruits add to the ultra-fine savoury tannin from the 90% whole bunch used is a feature. Long, deep and complex with rich dark fruits, the opulence of the vintage has left this wine with freshness, texture for a very long and bright future ahead.
