Giuseppe Cortese & Cascina Fontana

by Hugh French | Feb 16, 2021

Great New Release Barbaresco & Barolo

Giuseppe Cortese and Cascina Fontana are two small family-owned producers who have been championing Nebbiolo for decades.

A native of Barbaresco, Giuseppe Cortese began a lifelong passion for winemaking by working with his father Giacomo in the family business. After several years of experience, it was clear that their winery's future required a greater focus on terroir. With this in mind, Giuseppe repositioned the family’s wine business while remodelling the winery, improving vinification techniques, and purchasing new land among the famous Rabajà vineyards.

Cascina Fontana is located in the heart of the Barolo wine zone in the small hamlet of Perno, near Monforte d’Alba. Here the Fontana family cultivate grapes and make wine as they have done for the past six generations. Today winemaker Mario Fontana continues this tradition, overseeing the entire production cycle. From tending the vineyards to vinification, meticulous care is paramount at every stage.

Giuseppe Cortese

2018 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Usually $57 - Special Offer $50

Pale garnet in color, this wine offers delicately layered aromas of dried red cherries, plums, cola and sweet spice. On the palate, the wine is perfectly structured with integrated, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity, which along with its rich flavors, evolve into a sumptuously long finish. Ideal with robustly flavored cheese or braised beef dishes.

2017 Barbaresco DOCG
Usually $95 - Special Offer $85

Magnum (limited)
Usually $185 - Special Offer $169

A new wine from this producer comprising young vines from Rabaja and older ones from Trifolera (sits under Rabaja and Martinenga, and above Tre Stelle).

Lovely energy and freshness for a 2017 here. Ripe strawberry, spice, floral with a little camphor/mint. Medium-bodied, crisp, fine grip of light but sure tannin, perhaps some blood orange and rhubarb in with spice, and a pretty red fruited finish of good length. It’s a light but lovely wine. More to come.

2017 Barbaresco 'Rabaja' DOCG
Usually $125 - Special Offer $119

Magnum (limited)
Usually $269 - Special Offer $249

The floral character to the ripe, pretty fruit is very persuasive, as is the minerality to the wine. Medium to full body, very fine tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Really racy and fine-grained. Drink in 2022 and onwards.

2013 Barbaresco 'Rabaja' Riserva DOCG
Usually $229 - Special Offer $209

Magnum (limited)
Usually $469 - Special Offer $449

Intense florals – violet and dried rose, dark raspberry, cherry, licorice, spice. Medium-bodied, but deep and sinewy, ripe cherry fruit, intense minerally tightly packed black tea tannin, and despite its darkness and backwards nature, has an alluring mouth-perfume and repressed juiciness throughout; a sure signpost to the direction it will take in the future. And it’s long. A classic.

Cascina Fontana

2017 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Usually $59 - Special Offer $55

Richness of red fruit, spice and sage. It’s full of flavour and plenty of chewy tannin, some rose and orange peel perfume in a thick frame. Solid finish with some black tea in there. It’s kind of chunky at present, but I like it a fair bit. I think it will improve over the next few years.

2016 Barolo DOCG
Usually $135 - Special Offer $128

Magnum (limited)
Usually $279 - Special Offer $259

Classic style, a little understated, but full of charm. Red fruits, a little liquorice and sage, orange zest, spice and flowers. Mid-weight, some undergrowth, but full of almost succulent red fruits and blood orange, fine brick dust tannin, firm and long on a bright finish. So traditional and lovely. I think it will age beautifully too.

2015 Barolo 'Castiglione Falletto' DOCG
Usually $159 - Special Offer $149

Magnum (limited)
Usually $335 - Special Offer $309

Cherry, strawberry, spice, sage and tobacco, slight liquorice and chamomile perfume. Medium-weight, ripe powdery tannin, red fruits and orange, smattering of dried herb, balanced acidity, though has a softness to it, and a finish of quiet perfume, tobacco and red fruits. Not one for the ages, perhaps, but stylish with a classic feel.
