Numerous varieties are grown all over Australia's wine regions but some find a unique affinity with certain areas to really excel such as Riesling from the Eden Valley or Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley. Whatever the occasion, there is always a place for classic varieties from established regions. Today, we've picked two superb producers making wines that unquestionably represent their regions quintessential varieties.
Pewsey Vale has a long tradition of making quality Riesling high above the Barossa in the Eden Valley. The elevated altitudes here give way to cooler and longer ripening periods which is perfect for high-quality Riesling. Initially planted in 1847 and then revitalised in 1961, Pewsey Vale has been exclusively producing fantastic riesling with ageing potential for 60 years.
Born and bred in the Yarra, Mac Forbes found his love for winemaking while in France before heading home and cutting his teeth at the Yarra Valleys renowned Mount Mary. Since 2005, Mac has consistently produced exciting, well-crafted wines under his own label, and we think his 2020 Yarra Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir below are delicious.

2020 Riesling
Usually $23 - Special Offer $20
Attractive bath powder and lemon blossom as well as white peach, grapefruit and some flint. The palate has a super fleshy feel with a blaze of acidity and long, fresh lemon, grapefruit and white-peach flavors. Good acidity and concentration.

2015 The Contours Museum Reserve Riesling
Usually $36 - Special Offer $33
Pale straw-gold; heady aromas revealing the added layers of age and it is all about complexity. Lime marmalade, baked ricotta topped with lemon zest and toasty, too. It also has a line of acidity keeping this buoyant, tingling with freshness.

Jane Faulkner, The Wine Companion
Pale lemon. Mature, toasty lime and wax, with a hint of TDN and some floral notes that emerge. Intense, toasty lime palate that is assertive. Light-to-medium body. Toasty, long and fine.

2020 Yarra Valley Chardonnay
Usually $32 - Special Offer $29
Recognised across the Valley as a great season for Chardonnay, our 2020 Yarra Valley Chardonnay is zesty, pithy and bursting with crushed florals. Crunchy acidity and plenty of backbone makes this a perfect wine for lazy Sunday afternoons with half a dozen oysters.

2020 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
Usually $32 - Special Offer $29
Pinot is a fickle mistress, but we do love her so. Some of the smallest yields we’ve seen in decades, the 2020 vintage has delivered a Yarra Valley with heady perfume of lifted wild fruits and an elegant, fine boned structure. Can someone pass the Stilton?
