100 Point 2019 German Rieslings

by Hugh French | Apr 01, 2021

Astonishing 2019 German Riesling

2019 was quite a year for German producers. The vintage brought with it some nail-biting moments as late rains and devastating weather events threatened the vines, but once harvested, the quality of the fruit was nothing short of exceptional. Almost perfect ripeness tempered by searingly high acid gives rise to immediate drinkability and unmitigated enjoyment in the wines. 2019 is revealing itself to be another exceptional vintage following 2017 and 2018, and the quality of the wines (and the scores from critics) attest to that.

2019 Riesling Konigsbacher Idig Trocken GG
Extremely Limited - $209

The deepest waters are the most mysterious, because you look ever further down and never know what you're going to discover another five fathoms deeper. And just so, this beautiful riesling has seductive fruit that drags you into an abyss of beauty and joy. What stunning texture, and what a long, refined finish.

2019 Riesling Trocken
Usually $43 - Special Offer $39

Subtle herbal fragrance which cannot easily be split into its individual components, but oregano and fresh parsley ring olfactory bells. Truly refreshing on the palate, the herbal tangent keeps the upper hand but is well-supported by a delicate stone-fruit flavour. Slender and elegant, with lemony acidity keeping the taste buds alert on the finish.

Donnhoff

The grandchild of the estate's founder, Helmut Dönnhoff, paved the way for international success by establishing an enduring quality and style in his wines. His vintages would, in fact, become a byword for renowned German Rieslings the world over.

2019 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Trocken GG
Extremely Limited - $199

Ravishing bouquet of a thousand golden fruits and a staggering interplay of diamond-bright acidity and great succulence. Then, just when you think you've processed all that, along comes a monster wave of minerality, which sweeps you off your feet. But you land on the beach, deliriously happy.

2019 Riesling Niederhauser Hermannshohle Trocken GG
Extremely Limited - $199

The enveloping, peachy aroma with just a whisker of fresh pineapple leads into a mind-boggling micro-cosmos of flavor that's simultaneously rich, yet also supernaturally delicate. Sublime balance through the enormously long finish. Great aging potential.

2019 Riesling Feinherb
Usually $43 - Special Offer $38

Characterful Riesling from the steeply sloping vineyards of the middle Nahe region. The vines are 15 to 30 years old and grow in stony, weathered volcanic soils of porphyry and melaphyr in particular, with certain amounts of slate and quartzite. Fermented and matured in stainless steel vats, this is a delightful off-dry Riesling with nuanced natural sweetness and sophisticated acidity.

Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach has well and truly hit his stride after taking the winemaking reins from his late father Fritz a few years back. Warm, charming, modest and brilliant Fritz Hasselbach, who passed away from illness in October 2016, was the man who lifted the estate into the Rheinhessen's top flight. Johannes and the team are taking it even further, turning out stunning wines from top-rated vineyards of the Roter Hang, a steep hill of red slate overlooking the Rhine.

2019 Riesling Rothenberg Trocken GG
Extremely Limited - $119

The 2019 Riesling trocken Rothenberg GG is deep, intense and aromatic as well as refined and terroir-driven on the crunchy slate and iron-scented nose that is much less fruity than Hipping or Pettenthal but immensely deep and complex—a great wine! Rich and complex on the silky-textured palate, the 2019 combines intensity with lightness and finesse and finishes with purity and salinity. Sustainable finish with great aging potential. A great Riesling from Johannes Hasselbach, most likely the finest and most expressive he has produced so far.

2019 Riesling Pettenthal Trocken GG
Extremely Limited - $109

Intensely yellow in color, the 2019 Riesling trocken Pettenthal GG opens with a deep and intense, super aromatic and juicy bouquet of perfectly ripe, tropical (pineapple) fruit aromas intertwined with flinty notes of crushed, weathered slate. Rich yet refined and vital on the palate, this is a pure, lively and mineral Pettenthal with a lot of salt and dancing stones on the palate. The wine is not very dense or concentrated but juicy, refined and highly stimulating, almost Mosel-like in its playful, buoyant and frisky character. The finish is long and complex and reveals fine tannin grip and promising aging potential.

2019 Riesling Jean Baptiste Kabinett
Usually $35 - Special Offer $31

Who cares what is for dinner, this wine will work with it (as long as it’s not pudding)! A very attractive and refreshing, medium-dry riesling with so much wild-herb and tart-peach character. Long, dry, mineral finish with an attractive spritz that pulls you back to the glass.

2019 Fritz's Riesling
Usually $23 - Special Offer $21

...This wine is a tribute to the great man, made by his son Johannes Hasselbach, and it’s a fast-track passport to the pleasures of dry German Riesling. It shows aromatic lift, lovely stone fruit and lime, fresh natural acidity and a light dusting of spice. Dry, fresh and full of character, it’s a top-value winner.

Weingut Wittmann

Philipp Wittmann was named Winemaker of the Year 2014 by the Gault Millau Wine Guide, with the judges praising him as "one of the pioneers of organic viticulture and a driving force behind quality developments" in the southern Rheinhessen. "For many years he has produced superb dry Rieslings with fascinating ageing potential," they went on. "Almost single-handedly he elevated the Morstein site to legendary status."

2019 Riesling Westhofen Morstein Trocken GG
Extremely Limited -  $229

Let go of the narrow human world and fall into this expansive dry riesling that busts out of the conventional framework for the grape variety. And that's what makes it so difficult to describe. However, there is certainly more yellow fruit (mirabelle, but also a hint of pineapple) than white (some ripe pear) and the minerality is huge, yet totally precise and delicate. The finish really doesn't want to stop! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification.

2019 Riesling Westhofen Kirchspiel Trocken GG
Extremely Limited - $179

Powerful yet filigree with great, peach character, a ton of herbal aromas and delicate, yeasty notes. Impressive concentration and great minerality, the finish very long. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification
