Unforgettable 100 Point Barolos

by Hugh French | Apr 09, 2021

Luciano Sandrone

Luciano Sandrone describes 2016 as a year with slightly elevated yields and a long, protracted harvest. As for the wines, well, they are truly special.

Known for crafting some of the greatest and most sought after expressions of red Piedmontese grape varieties, the tireless Luciano Sandrone and his family have once again produced something extraordinary in their latest release. Most notable are the monumental Barolos, which have received enormous critical acclaim achieving high scores across the board (in particular, the 2016 and 2010 'Le Vigne' receiving perfect 100 Point scores!).

Luciano also produces exemplary Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo that serve as an ideal entry point to this magnificent producer or simply beautiful wines to drink while waiting for the Barolos to come of age.

2019 Dolcetto d'Alba DOC
Usually $45 - Special Offer $40

Sandrone’s Dolcetto is without doubt one of the very finest examples of the region... The consistent quality of this wine—its purity, silky texture, fine tannins and balance—can only come with perfectly ripe fruit from top sites...It’s a super-fine, autumnal-noted wine with characters that you might more readily associate with Nebbiolo (dark cherry, menthol, forest floor, florals, pan juices and almond oil) than Dolcetto. Really classical in both its flavour spectrum and structure (there are plenty of fine tannins) this is a wonderful Piemontese red that is already superb drinking. It will be a revelation for lovers of classic Piemontese reds.

2018 Barbera d'Alba DOC
Usually $72 - Special Offer $65

The Luciano Sandrone 2018 Barbera d'Alba is a wine of remarkable smoothness and integration. There are absolutely no sharp edges here, as this Barbera is polished and buffed over twice for good measure. It is packed tight with luscious dark fruit and blackberry preserves. That dark core is framed by light touches of Indian spice, campfire ash and truffle. There is a note of cherry sweetness on the close, but it is beautifully softened by all that rich intensity. If you are a fan of the Barbera grape, let me draw your attention to this tremendous value.

2018Nebbiolo d'Alba 'Valmaggiore' DOC
Usually $99- Special Offer $89

The Luciano Sandrone 2018 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore shows a very fruity, fresh and accessible side of the Nebbiolo grape. This wine is open-knit and inviting with a steady succession of aromas that range from red cherry and plum to rosemary sprig and crushed mineral. On some level, you could call it Barolo Lite, although that does not do justice to the Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero that outperforms year after year. The wine is Barolo-adjacent for sure, but it offers its own bright and distinct personality. It's an exciting, new generation of Nebbiolo.

2016 Barolo 'Le Vigne' DOCG
Extremely Limited - $319

I absolutely adore this wine on every emotional and intellectual level. I can still taste it today, weeks after my first sampling. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is a stirring and profound expression that pulls on your heartstrings. I found it to be unforgettable, quite literally, inspiring one of those celebrated "wow" moments that we wine lovers so desperately seek in bottle after bottle. Le Vigne is a clever blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba (offering the power), Villero in Castiglione Falletto (shaping the precision), Vignane in Barolo (adding to the purity of the aromas) and Merli in Novello (that helps to flesh out the fruit). This intersection of various vineyards spanning the appellation creates a pyramid of perfection and beauty. The wine shows large construction, but that fruit weight is balanced against the vivid cherry, spice, aniseed and campfire ash that gently lift from the bouquet.

The 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is brilliant and explosive in the glass, with tons of brightness, energy and tension. Classically austere, the 2016 is going to take a few years to be at its best, and yet the wine is so arrestingly beautiful today. A mix of freshly cut and dried flowers, mint and pine add an intriguing upper register. In 2016, Le Vigne is finely chiseled and sculpted from start to finish. Bright saline notes add a closing kick of freshness.

2010Barolo 'Le Vigne' Sibi et Paucis DOCG
Extremely Limited -$419

The 2010 Barolo Le Vigne is brilliant. Focused and explosive in its aromatic intensity, the 2010 is fresh and wonderfully nuanced in the glass. It is also aging at a slower rate than the Cannubi Boschis. At nearly ten years of age, the 2010 is fresh, vibrant and so full of energy. It is also every bit as memorable as it was on release.

2016 Barolo 'Aleste' DOCG
750ml Extremely Limited - $319

Magnum Extremely Limited - $659

The 2016 Barolo Aleste is ample, creamy and expansive in feel. But more than that, the 2016 stands out for its freshness, persistence and brilliance. In so many vintages, the Aleste (formerly known as Cannubi Boschis) has been rich and powerful in feel, but in 2016, the wine is all about finesse. The red-fruited, floral purity of Nebbiolo comes through beautifully here; I especially admire the wine's translucence. Wow.

2014 Barolo 'Vite Talin' DOCG
Extremely Limited - $949

The 2014 Barolo Vite Talin is fabulous. Rich and ample in feel, the 2014 melds together the natural richness this heavily virused clone produces in its tiny yields with the freshness of 2014. Black cherry, licorice, spice, menthol and chocolate are all given an extra kick of textural richness in this positively stunning Barolo that is easily one of the most compelling wines of this tricky year. The cold, late-ripening year produced an exotic Barolo laced with hints of apricot and wild flowers that are unusual in Barolo.
