Incredible 2018 White Burgundy

by Hugh French | May 05, 2021

2018 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot & Pierre Morey

2018 saw some of the warmest temperatures experienced by the Cote d'Or. Subsequently, the region's vignerons were forced to pay close attention to the vines to ensure the fruit retained the brilliant acidity that makes these wines so unique. For those who did, a spectacular vintage ensued that brought about both wines of incredible depth and complexity while retaining brilliant acidity and freshness.

Two such producers are Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot and Pierre Morey, of which we offer their superb 2018 wines below.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or callus on 03 9419 6990.

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot

Jean-Marc Pillot has now taken over the running of this 10-hectare Domaine in Chassagne Montrachet from his father Jean. He is a trained oenologist and has propelled the domaine into the top rank of Chassagne producers. Unfortunately demand for his wines has soared worldwide and as a result, stocks are limited. Buy while stocks remain! These wines seem to possess everything - richness and depth of fruit, the classic firmness of a great Chassagne and a long, smooth and harmonious finish.

2018 Puligny-Montrachet 'Les Noyers Bret'
Usually $142 - Special Offer $134

An overtly floral and ever-so-vaguely exotic nose of jasmine tea, tangerine peel and pear aromas. The racy, intense and beautifully well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess good length and reasonably good depth. However, my sense is that the underlying material is so good here that much more depth will very likely develop. In sum, this is one to look for provided you intend to cellar it for at least a few years first. Outstanding, Top Value.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Baudines'
Usually $179 - Special Offer $169

Cool, pure and reticent aromas offer up notes of mineral reduction, lemon grass and essence of green apple. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is finer if not quite as concentrated with even more minerality that become increasingly more prominent as the clean and bone-dry finish sits on the palate. As is usually the case, this is a Baudines of finesse. Sweet Spot, Outstanding.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Macherelles'
Usually $179 - Special Offer $169

Here there is just enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background, but it clearly seems ripe. There is excellent verve to the delicious middle weight flavors that aren't quite as dense but they're even finer while culminating in a complex, long and lemon-tinged finale. This is really lovely. Sweet Spot, Outstanding.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Fairendes'
Usually $179 - Special Offer $169

Pretty and airy aromas are composed by notes of poached pear, citrus and floral nuances. The delicious and nicely textured flavors are much like those of the Macherelles in that they're not especially dense yet somehow, they are much more powerful on the sappy, clean, dry and persistent finale.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Champs-Gain'
Usually $179 - Special Offer $169

A very fresh if reticent nose timidly reveals its aromas of white orchard fruit, citrus and discreet spice wisps. There is both lovely delineation and energy to the middle weight flavors that possess very good depth on the very dry, intense and sneaky long finish.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Vergers'
Usually $184 - Special Offer $174

A slightly more elegant if similar nose complements the sublimely textured medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing yet punchy mouthfeel, all wrapped in a lingering, balanced and solidly complex finish. This is a bit more muscular than the Chenevottes, but the two wines are qualitatively similar. Outstanding.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Clos Saint-Marc'
Usually $239 - Special Offer $229

This is also agreeably cool and airy with its aromas of essence of wet stone, apple compote and pretty citrus wisps. There is excellent density to the powerful and almost painfully intense larger-scaled flavors that terminate in a chiseled, palate coating and wonderfully long finish. As it usually is, this is excellent and worth a search to find. Sweet Spot, Outstanding.

2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Usually $469 - Special Offer $449

Cool and reticent aromas reluctantly display their nuances of green apple, pear and white peach along with subtle mineral reduction hints. There is excellent richness to the suave, full-bodied and concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess almost painful intensity while delivering outstanding finishing persistence. This tightly wound effort is akin to rolling small pebbles around in the mouth and a CC that should age gracefully.

2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Usually $999 - Special Offer $949

An admirably discreet application of wood sets off the ultra-floral suffused nose of various white orchard fruit, tangerine, lemon and pretty spice and exotic tea wisps. There is once again excellent volume to the palate coating medium weight flavors that ooze minerality on the classy but powerful finish that is clearly very tightly wound. This is very promising and should also age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years.

Pierre Morey
I have a soft spot for this domaine that partly stems for my admiration toward Pierre himself as a winemaker par excellence, a reputation consolidated during 20 years as cellar master at Domaine Leflaive between 1988 and 2008, partly because of the infectious passion from his talented daughter Anne and partly because there is a sense of honesty and truth imbued into their wines.

2018 Meursault
Usually $199 - Special Offer $189

The 2018 Meursault Village is the usual blend of three parcels from Pellands, Chaumes de Narvaux and Forge. It has a very intense bouquet for a Village, the honeysuckle and orange pith aromas storming from the glass. The palate is likewise intense and brimming with energy, and quite spicy in the mouth, with hints of stem ginger and pineapple. Long on the finish, this Village Cru punches above its weight.

2018 Meursault 'Les Tessons'
Usually $245 - Special Offer $229

The 2018 Meursault Les Tessons comes from a single parcel close to Jean-Marc Roulot’s. It has a very pure and very Meursault bouquet with all the leitmotifs one expects: grilled walnut, touches of almond and a little passion fruit. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A subtle spiciness defines that finish, which offers just the right amount of salinity. Superb.

2018 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Usually $919- Special Offer $859

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comprises three-and-a-half barrels this year. It has an absolutely killer bouquet of intense, mineral-rich citrus fruit that gains vigor with aeration. Wonderful delineation and precision here, with oyster shell and estuarine scents emerging with time. The palate is very well balanced, delivering a precise, intense entry and enormous depth and volume in the mouth, but with counterbalancing tension on a long, spicy finish that fans out wonderfully. Superb.
