Luke Lambert first went to Denton Vineyard to make theirNebbiolo in the 2010 vintage. Since the 2015 vintage Luke has been theirsole winemaker.
John and Simon Denton’svineyard, ‘View Hill’, is an isolated hill in the middle of the Yarra Valley on the north side of the Yarra River and has a great aspect for grape growing and wonderful views of the whole valley.
This unique terroir was formed 370 million years ago in the late Devonian age from an active volcano that left behind a ‘granite’ plug. This granitic sandy soil over massive granite boulders is the key element of their special site.
Theesare elegant, varietal and site specific wines that are delicious and enjoyable now and will develop additional complexity with age.

2019 Chardonnay

Our bestfruit is selected to make this wine and only in the best vintages. Whole bunch pressed older French oak barrique and puncheon for wild yeast ferment and malo-lactic fermentation (100%). Left on full lees with occasional stirring for 6 months. Bottled without fining or filtration. The granitic soils of the vineyard are most evident here.
Flint, talc, river stone, jasmine and citrus. Minerality is coupled with the gentle stone fruit and cut hay characters of this block. This Eastern slope catches softer light and always leaves the wines with high natural acidity and freshness.

Texture for the win. This is a lengthy chardonnay with white peach, bran, cider apple and pear flavours given subtle boost by cedarwood characters. The flow of flavour goes on but the mouthfeel is something else. There’s a spark to this wine; a nervous, gathered energy.

2019 Pinot Noir

The Denton Pinot Noir block sits at the very top of our North Eastern slope, and sees the softest morning light and is shielded from the hot afternoon sun. The planting density here is 1.3m x 0.8m and this high density spacing always gives us more power and concentration while maintaining the lightness and elegance of the vineyard. The granitic sand over granite boulders and long, slow growing season provide a very special and unique terroir.
This unique micro-climate and soil profile contribute lots of bright, fresh red and black fruit, and mineral florals, framed by fine tannin on an acid frame.

2017 Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo block sits half way up the North Western slope, catching all available sunshine hours. The granitic sand over granite boulders and long, slow growing season provide a very special and unique terroir.
This unique micro-climate and soil profile contribute lots of bright, fresh red fruit, aniseed, red flower perfume, and fine tannin on an acid frame.
Destemmed, wild yeast fermented and held on skins for 20 days with frequent plunging and foot stomping. No temperature control. Pressed into tank then racked to French oak puncheon (20% new) prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
2017 is the best harvest I've seen in the Valley. It's broken the trend of early/warm harvest and was wonderfully mild, long and slow. Means lots of perfume and high acidity. In my view it was the perfect season, a 10 out of 10.
