Best's Great Western
Best's Great Western boasts a historical collection of Australia's oldest and most significant vineyards.
Best's is one of the oldest family-owned and operated vineyards in Australia, with its roots firmly planted in the soils of Victoria's Great Western region since 1866. The winery remained in Best's hands from the initial plantings of 1867 until the death of Henry Best in 1920. At this time, the land and winery was procured by the Thomson family and remains under their ownership, now with thefifth generation at the helm. Today, Ben Thomson divides his time between managing the commercial aspect of Best's while also tending to the historic Victorian vineyards, some of which still nurture vines dating back to this great producers inception. Alongside Ben is winemaker Justin Purser, who joined the team in 2011. Justin has vast experience, having worked worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand and even as a supervisor for the renowned Domaine de Montille, overseeing the composition of Premier and Grand Cru cuvee.

"From vines planted 1868, 1966, '70 and '92, hand-picked, sorted, fermented with 25% whole bunches, the remainder whole berry, matured for 17 months in French barriques and hogsheads (20% new). The deepest colour and largest build of the Best's Shirazs, here black and blue fruits have fine, but not apologetic, tannins running alongside the fruits - which don't give it (the tannins) even a passing glance)."
