Unmissable Beaujolais from Jean-Marc Burgaud

by Hugh French | Jul 01, 2021

Jean-Marc Burgaud

Is there any other Beaujolais producer who consistently delivers as much bang for the buck as Burgaud? Not for my money.
Josh Raynolds, vinous.com

The more I taste Jean-Marc Burgaud's wines, the more I find to admire. He celebrated his 30th vintage last year, and he has much to be proud of. A winemaker at the peak of his powers, Burgaud has abandoned new oak in favor of seasoned wood, and extraction is more measured than in the past, with his classical semi-carbonic macerations ranging from between seven and 15 days in duration, depending on the cuvée. And there's just one bottling of each wine, making for rare consistency...

2019 Regnie 'Vallieres'
Usually $49 - Special Offer $45

From 50-year-old vines growing in stony, sandy soils, the 2019 Régnié Vallières bursts with aromas of cherries, raspberries and blackberries, complemented by subtle hints of potpourri and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's velvety and succulent, with an ample core of beautifully pure fruit that's girdled by melting tannins and lively acids. This has turned out especially well this year.

2019 Morgon 'Les Charmes'
Usually $54 - Special Offer $49

Les Charmes comes from granitic soils to the west of Morgon which produce wines that tend to be more approachable than Côte du Py. The 60-year-old vines are gobelet trained and planted at a high density to reduce Gamay's vigour. Frost-shrunk vintage. Maceration lasted only nine days in 2019, with daily pumping over, to achieve the desired level of extraction. All the grapes were fermented as whole bunches which Jean-Marc refers to as 'sémi macération carbonique'.
Mid crimson. Really zesty, transparent nose – quite different from the more concentrated Côte du Py. This has the flirtatious – even slightly peppery – side that so many wine lovers seek in a cru beaujolais. Lovely racy fruit and a juicy, drink-me quality.

2019 Morgon 'Javernieres'
Usually $105 - Special Offer $94

This lower on the slope. All large-format barrels for elevage, older barrels. This just bottled – three weeks previously.
Less volume of aroma but a fine width of florals underpinned by a subtle barrel reference. Ultra-silky, certainly you can taste the oak but it’s not too ‘in your face’ – great finishing – so persistent. Wait 3 years if you don’t want to taste any oak, but that’s a great wine.

2019 Morgon 'James'
Usually $119 - Special Offer $109

This Morgon is so vibrant, it’s shocking! Serious tannins and whiplash acidity give this almost supernatural drive and energy. At the moment, the black-fruit aromas are way in the background, but maybe we have to learn that Beaujolais can live for decades, because this one sure will! Drinkable now, but better from 2023.
