Domaine Guiberteau
“Romain Guiberteau’s white wines made him famous. When they hit the mainstream, they blew everyone’s minds with their power, energy, and sharpness. These wines are so potent and high energy as to require some time in bottle, so don’t open too early...The reds are great, too. Some contend Romain Guiberteau is in fact a better red-wine maker, despite his white-wine fame.”
Rajat Parr, The Sommelier's Atlas of Taste
“Romain Guiberteau’s hedonistic winemaking style is increasingly earning him a reputation as Rougeard for a new generation.”

"Domaine Guiberteau is simply one of the Loire Valley’s most sought artisanal domaines. The progression is vitally apparent in this grower’s reds, which have become more poised and refined with each vintage, pushing the boundaries of the appellation’s potential. A few years back, when I first read Rajat Parr’s quote above, I initially raised an eyebrow. No longer. With every passing year, Parr’s words on Guiberteau’s reds take on renewed focus. On the other hand, few will need reminding that the whites are the bomb: layered, articulate Chenin Blancs of stunning tension and chiselled clarity"

2019 Saumur Blanc 'Les Moulins'
Usually $94 - Special Offer $84
"Blanc. Les Moulins was created in 2014 as a destination for the Domaine’s non-certified fruit, (from vines undergoing organic conversion). The current blend is drawn from roughly two hectares spread across the communes of Montreuil-Bellay, Brézé, and Bizay (home to the Clos de Guichaux), on the classic clay and limestone of the area. Vine age varies from over 85 years in Brézé to younger vine fruit in Bizay, with an average age of 30 years."

2018 Saumur Blanc 'Bizay - Clos de Guichaux'
Usually $129 - Special Offer $119
"100% Chenin Blanc. Guiberteau’s 1.4-hectare Clos de Guichaux vineyard is a historically renowned vineyard in Bizay, very near Brézé, and a monopole for Guiberteau. The site is the classic clay/limestone of the region but has only 30cm of topsoil before the roots must plunge directly into the pure, chalky bedrock. It was replanted in the early 2000s with massale cuttings taken from the family’s best old vines in Brézé. It’s a site that is quickly cementing its place as one of Saumur’s finest white vineyards—thanks to wines like this."

2017 Saumur Blanc 'Breze'
Usually $179 - Special Offer $169
"This is a wine to remind us of the potency of this incredible terroir, which can simultaneously deliver the texture and savoury reduction of great white Burgundy and the raciness of great German Riesling. If the Clos de Guichaux can remind of great Chablis, the Brézé style leans towards the textural richness of fine Meursault (at a fraction of the price). There’s quince, honey, a touch of matchstick, crème brûlée and iodine. The distinction of the terroir shines through in the wine’s depth, austerity and the long, salty, and deeply etched finish. It’s still a baby—tightly wound with dry extract, smoky reductive notes and vinous intensity—so if drinking soon, the decanter is your friend. "

2019 Saumur Rouge
Usually $74 - Special Offer $69
"100% Cabernet Franc. Guiberteau’s village rouge is sourced from three parcels of old-vine Cabernet Franc (planted from 1955 to 1957) which lie on silty/sandy topsoils over limestone on the Brézé hill. Made entirely from de-stemmed grapes, this fruit-forward bottling was naturally fermented in concrete before spending 12 months in large tronconique barrels. This reverses the logic we found in the white releases, where the Moulins is elevated above villages. Romain Guiberteau clearly thought the same, hence the pricing."

2018 Saumur Rouge 'Bizay - Les Chapaudaises'
Usually $129 - Special Offer $119
"100% Cabernet Franc. Les Chapaudaises is located in the small village of Bizay, within half a kilometre of Saumur's prized hill of Brézé. It’s next to Guiberteau’s monopole Clos de Guichaux, on the same sandy tuffeau limestone, the vines a mix of Chenin Blanc and old-vine Cabernet Franc. One hectare of the Chenin is leased to Romain’s right-hand-man, Brendan Stater-West, with the remaining Chenin finding its way into the Saumur Blanc. But it’s the 1948-planted Cabernet Franc that is Guiberteau’s prize here."

2017 Saumur Rouge 'Breze - Les Arboises'
Usually $179 - Special Offer $169
"100% Cabernet Franc. Les Arboises is a subsection of the limestone dominant Brézé hill. This is Guiberteau’s top red from renowned red terroir. The monopole parcel was planted in 1957 on a very rocky, chalky site, and produces super-graceful and mineral expressions of Saumur.
As good as Les Chapaudaises is, this takes it to a whole new level: it’s emblematic of the style, structure, and resonant depth of this producer’s boundary-pushing reds. From another Saumur vintage blighted by low yields, 2017 has turned out a nervy and thrilling Arboises, with delicate smoke, graphite and forest floor aromas segueing into sweet black cherry, all balanced by chalky tannin and classy, perfumed length. There can’t be many finer Loire reds than this impressively vivid bottling. "
