Torbreck - 99 Point RunRig Out Now

by Hugh French | Jul 07, 2021

Torbreck

Torbreck certainly doesn't bow to trends, nor do they try to be all things to all people. They have a single-minded focus on making world-class examples of Rhone varieties in the Barossa with some of the oldest and most precious vineyard resources on earth (many sites dating back to the 1800s). The wines are unmistakably Torbreck, powerful and silky but always balanced and never overtly oaky or jammy.

We are extremely proud to offer their latest releases from 2018, RunRig, Descendant and The Factor, three decidedly different expressions of the Barossa.

We also have a tiny amount of the recently released 2016 The Laird, one of the more extraordinary wines produced in this country!

2018 RunRig
Usually $339 - Special Offer $299

Torbreck’s 2018 RunRig needs a bit of air 99 right now, as the nose and palate truly open up and expand after a while in the glass. Unlike some vintages, it’s rather tight and cedary upon first pour, then relaxes to reveal hints of stone fruit, blueberries, cherries, pastry crust and baking spices. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied and concentrated, richly textured and marked by ripe tannins, which leave behind a velvety, mouth-coating finish tinged with licorice and dark berries. While approachable now—and even damn enjoyable—it deserves another several years in the cellar. Drink the 2018 Descendant while waiting.

2018 Descendant
Usually $140 - Special Offer $125

What a lush, charming, wonderfully drinkable wine. The 2018 Descendant, made by fermenting Shiraz on Viognier skins, is a terrific effort, starting from its intriguing spicy, peppery aromas. Those notes are seamlessly intertwined with impressively ripe fruit scents evocative of blueberries and cherries, while the full-bodied palate is plush, creamy and supple without being unstructured or overblown. Softly dusty tannins ground the finish, lending a sense of savory balance to this beauty. Descendent is one of my favorite Torbreck bottlings year after year, and this may be the best one yet.

2018 The Factor
Usually $140 - Special Offer $125

A pristine nose of ripe and intense black berries, blueberries and redcurrants, as well as some sanguine, rust-like notes. This is an excellent edition of The Factor. I like the power and focus this wine delivers and, in 2018, it is a wine of great length and presence. Abundant ripe blackberries bathe the palate. Try from 2025.

2016 The Laird
Usually $899 - Special Offer $829

A distinctive and very concentrated, single parcel shiraz that offers a rich plum and raisin nose with plenty of tarry notes and a swathe of baking spices. The palate is packed with rich, dark-plum and black-fruit flavors and the long, strong hold on the finish lasts for minutes. So intense, this is their finest Laird to date. Best from 2028.
