Bernard Baudry
"Bernard Baudry is, here and now, one of the leading domaines of the appellation. Some would say the leading domaine of the appellation. The wines are of exceptionally high quality..."

"While they are sometimes labelled traditionalists, I find them to be more naturalists. Everything here is organic, harvested by hand and bottled without fining or filtration. In any case, theirs is a style that I admire: they make cabernet franc taste as suave and succulent as pinot noir."

2019 Chinon Blanc
Usually $69 - Special Offer $59
"This vintage fermented slowly, so there was still a little of sugar present in spring when the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations completed. At present there is at least 2.1 g/l residual sugar here, according to Matthieu. The nose here is delightful, with orange, apricot skin, kumquat and guava. A very polished style on the palate, charming and fresh, certainly correct, with a chalky freshness to it, a good weight and effusive energy. It maintains a good vigour throughout, with a tense and minerally underbelly. A very attractive white Chinon."

2020 Chinon 'Les Granges'
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44
Even fresher and more vibrant than the inky dark 2019, this jumps out of the glass with lifted and perfumed aromas of perfectly ripened blackcurrant/blackberry Cabernet Franc fruit, black pepper and anise. It’s equally vibrant on the palate, which relies just as much on its crunchy acidity as its lively tannins. This spring, it’s the perfect wine to have in one hand when you’ve got a barbecued lamb cutlet in the other.

2017Chinon 'Le Domaine'
Usually $54 - Special Offer $45
“The nose has a darkness to it, a black cherry intensity dressed with an intense violet perfume. There is a delightful wealth of fruit on the palate though, pure and yet plump with scented cherry fruits. Harmonious and supple, there is nevertheless a dry and grained character to the middle and end of the palate. In the end, though, it is the fresh and perfumed fruits that dominate.”

2019 Chinon 'Le Domaine'
Usually $54 - Special Offer $47
"The nose is aromatic and welcoming, with scents of dark cherry and currant to the fore, followed by more floral nuances reminiscent of rose petal and peony. In terms of aromatic style it feels very true to the Cabernet Franc variety. Taut and tense at the start of the palate this is grippy and structured, but with dried berry and floral notes. Through the middle it develops an almost silky texture, a supple and slightly spiced perfume, leading into a limestone grip in the finish. Texturally very different to Les Granges, for sure. And full of promise."

2019 Chinon 'Les Grezeaux'
Offer Price $69
(Extremely Limited)
"An iconic vineyard for the domaine, situated opposite Bernard’s house, with soils of gravel and sandy clay. This vintage has been aged in cementcuvewhere it will rest for fifteen months; thecuvéehas not seen a barrel since the 2007 vintage. A gorgeous black-violet hue in the glass, the noses shimmers with a dark, pure and focused intensity, with scents of violet, peony, black cherry and currant. Texturally silky, fresh and pure on the palate, it maintains a supple style through the middle, with great energy and vivacity. This is just so complete, polished and stylish – could you ask for more in a wine? Definitely one for the (by which I mean my) cellar."

2018 Chinon 'Le Clos Guillot'
Offer Price $94
(Extremely Limited)
"Tasted from barrel with Matthieu, this will see out 12 months in barrel, then 12 months in cuve. It also displays an incredibly dense colour in the glass. The nose is smoky and expressive, wrapped in toasted elements from the barrels, with intertwined floral notes, violet and peony. A very tense and direct style on the palate, yet it remains supple and polished. Cool, with vibrant acidity, which seems to lift the fragrant floral elements, bringing to the fore scents of roses and violets. Behind this is the grip of the tannins, lush and long. This is incredible, so very complete, with silky harmony and such purity, but also depth and substance."

2018 Chinon 'La Croix Boissee'
Offer Price $114
(Extremely Limited)
"Tasted from barrel, this is the Baudry’s top cuvée, from the famed limestone terroir of the same name. After the charm of the 2018 Le Clos Guillot it was difficult to imagine how this could lift its game, but it does of course. This presents a surprising intensity on the nose, exploding with crushed summer berries, fresh cherry stone, perfume with rose petal and peony scents. The palate is so focused and pure, very correct and framed, with an elegant style. It has chalky tannins and it feels firmly gripped, beating Le Clos Guillot in terms of style, while remaining very true to the Chinon appellation. This is nothing short of fabulous."
