2019 Domaine Gilbert Picq
Unfortunately, we had lower quantities with around a 30% to 50% reduction in each plot. But, the quality is exceptional and the wines have the richness worthy of the greatest vintages. They have concentrated notes of ripe fruit, and the minerality of our terroirs brings freshness and the digestibility necessary for the finest Chablis vintages.

My visit to Domaine Picq at the entrance of Chichée often serves as a barometer for how the region performed generally in a given vintage. Didier Picq’s wines are the epitome of nervy, almost Zen-like Chablis that would run a mile if someone even mentioned “oak” in their presence. Yet, Picq manages to imbue his half-dozen or so cuvées with immense concentration and flavor year after year.

2019 Chablis

The 2019 Chablis Village was tasted both separately and as a blend so that Didier Picq could show the different terroirs: limestone, clay and a third from younger vines on clay-limestone soils (12 different parcels dispersed over 8ha.) There is superb intensity on the nose, featuring red and green apples, pear and a strong oyster shell/marine scent. The palate is nicely poised and full of tension emanating from the limestone terroirs that also lend this Village Cru its persistence on the finish. Classic Chablis from start to finish.

2019 Chablis 'Dessus La Carriere'

The 2019 Chablis "Dessus La Carrière" comes from vines over 50 years old. It has an intense wet limestone and oyster shell bouquet that is beautifully defined and quintessentially Chablis. The palate is vibrant right from the start, slightly chalky in texture, with a killer line of acidity and a surfeit of green apples mixed with crushed stone on the austere but utterly captivating finish. Highly recommended.

2019 Chablis 1er Cru 'Vosgros'

The 2019 Chablis Vosgros comes from vines planted in the early 1960s and in 1986. The nose sports a very subtle but beneficial reduction, and there are lovely, pure dried pineapple and crushed limestone scents underneath. The palate is well balanced with a little more substance than the Vaucoupin and comes across as spicier toward the persistent finish. Excellent, but this cuvée will demand the most patience from Picq’s devotees.
