Domaine Fabien Coche ... is one of the most underrated sources of high-quality white Burgundy in the Côte de Beaune. Alain Coche took his time, leaving his wines on the lees to mature at a leisurely pace for two winters, and produced classically balanced, textbook Meursault that evolved beautifully in the cellar; today, his son Fabien follows suit, with a few small refinements: today, the Coche harvest takes two weeks, not one, with each parcel brought in at optimal maturity, and there are more larger-format barrels in the cellar alongside the regular Burgundian pièces. These are not stylized, flashy wines, and they aren’t as dramatic as some of the region’s more sought-after domaines on release, but readers with the patience to cellar them will be amply rewarded.

2019 Bourgogne Cote d'Or Blanc
Usually $79 - Special Offer $69
Coming from 7 parcels of beautifully situated vines owned by the estate all within Meursault just below the village. This wine is whole bunch pressed then raised in a 3000 litre foudre before being moved back to stainless steel for 6 months in tank and bottled with no fining or filtration in January after a total of 16 months on lees. This is clearly not an average Bourgogne blanc with weight texture and character way above its humble appellation label. A Bourgogne blanc that delivers freshness and attractive Chardonnay fruit yet is also very complex and fine.

2019 Meursault 'Les Chevalieres'
Usually $189 - Special Offer $169
Les Chevalieres lies just above the village of Meursault where the slope follows at the same altitude as the premier cru’s just a little further south. Chevalieres adjoins Les Luchets which is positioned against the top part of this lieu-dit. Tasted early April 2019 the day before bottling, not surprisingly this showed a tiny bit of struck-match SO2 complexity. Despite the hint of reduction this showed lovely fine floral lift over what is clearly a very deep and rich wine showing obvious real old vine intensity. This is a real step up in intensity and character with the cooler site adding a little more acidity and lift to the wine. A fabulous village Meursault and an absolute steal compared to the $1,000+ cost of Chevaliers from his cousin. Buy a case.

2019 Meursault 'Les Luchets'
Usually $189 - Special Offer $175
Les Luchets lies above the village quite high on the slope, which is where many of the younger vignerons favour for cooler more mineral wines terroir and better natural acidity. This vineyard is the ‘signature’ vineyard of his cousins, the Roulot family. The aromas seem to show a cooler aspect with more citric acidity lifting the fruit and lengthening the palate. This shows great structure and length finishing very long with a beautifully formed line of fruit on the palate. A wine to wait a few years for.

2019 Meursault 1er Cru 'Goutte d’Or'
Usually $319 - Special Offer $299
From 80+ year old vines located in the middle of the appellation in one of its best 1er cru sites which gained its name from the from the tiny flint stones which glistened in the vineyard hence the name meaning drops of gold. Notably floral and lifted this wine shows excellent old vine intensity and lively acidity giving great shape and length to the palate. Finer and more racy than the Charmes this wine wants more time to show its best. A fabulous 1er cru by any standards.

Domaine Lignier-Michelot
...Lignier has crafted some genuinely terrific 2019s and these are definitely wines to check out.

The Lignier family have deep roots in the village of Morey Saint Denis and own 10.5 hectares of some of the very best vineyard sites in this village, and also in the 2 neighbouring villages Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. Virgile’s father and grand-father had always produced wine and sold it to negotiants until Virgile started working with his father in the early 1990’s and he decided to sell the wines himself. Now with almost 20 vintages of experience Virgile has moved the domaine to fully organic viticulture and is producing what many believe to be the best wines of this prestigious village.

2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 'Cuvee Bertin'
Usually $189 - Special Offer $169
From Seuvreys, Creux Billard, Es Murots, vinified with 100% whole bunches. There is a huge density of fruit on the nose after a very dark colour. Sweetly ripe, perhaps a little exaggerated here, very dark fruit, just short of raisiny. Length and abundant flavour. Saved by the whole bunch. Tasted: November 2020

2019 Morey-Saint-Denis V.V.
Usually $189 - Special Offer $169
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes contains 80% whole bunches. It has an opulent bouquet that is more towards the heady style, touches of dates and fig filtering through the black fruit but still fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf, opening up nicely on the finish that cruises along with a sprinkling of white pepper and cumin. Good potential, so long as the aromatics do not become any more extravagant.

2019 Morey-St.-Denis 'En La Rue de Vergy'
Usually $189 - Special Offer $169
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue de Vergy, comes from 50-year-old vines and is blended with 70% whole bunches. It has an intense nose, a mélange of red/black fruit, hints of kirsch and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with shimmering red berry fruit, a fine bead of acidity, silky smooth with a surfeit of tension on the finish. What is not to like about this Morey-Saint-Denis? Very little.

2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Usually $899 - Special Offer $859
80% whole bunch. Virgile now has 0.80ha to play with, the latest addition being old vines. Planting dates now range from 1944 to 1990. Gorgeous deep purple. This Clos de la Roche has a brilliant bouquet with blue fruit mixed in to a vast range of deep complex red and black notes, both acidity and tannins in the right place. There is a classic grainy texture here too and wonderful length. Tasted: November 2020

2019 Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru
Usually $949 - Special Offer $899
The 2019 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is made with 100% whole bunches and matured in used oak this year and that is evident on the nose with open, transparent scents of blackberry, briary and crushed rock aromas. Less opulent than the Clos de la Roche, this is slightly more austere but no less captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, great depth and cohesion, structured towards the finish with touches of melted tar and tobacco. Superb.
