Not many producers can say they’ve helped shape an entire wine region and been at the forefront of popularity for that area. Even fewer can say their style is the envy of their neighbours and the bane of those who attempt to replicate it. Ron Laughton is a legend in Heathcote and justifiably so. His name is synonymous with wines of power, purity and balance, and at the height of importance to Jasper Hill is their sense of terroir. One of the pioneers of the biodynamic movement in Australian viticulture, they have shown the way for future producers.
In 2020 Jasper Hill experienced significant drought conditions that severely impacted the yield from all their vineyards. This lower yield resulted in some wines, including the Emily's Paddock Shiraz Cabernet Franc not being produced. To enable a release of Georgia's Paddock Shiraz, Ron enlisted the help of other vineyards in the region, hence the 2020 wine is renamed for this vintage as Georgia and Friends Shiraz.

2020 Georgia and Friends Shiraz
Usually $92 - Special Offer $84
Extreme drought preceding the 2020 harvest resulted in a very small vintage of excellent Georgia’s Paddock fruit, which was complemented with the addition of some purchased Heathcote “friends” grapes to produce this blend. Lifted aromas and flavours of complex, mixed ripe red and black berries with typical spiciness. If you can call a 15% alcohol wine elegant, the resulting wine has the expected magenta colour, with the normal fabulous balance between high acidity and supple tannins. Not quite as massive as some previous vintages by deliberately picking slightly earlier, this is delicious now as an ideal match for red meat / duck dishes and also has medium term cellaring capability.

2019 Georgia's Paddock Shiraz
Usually $92 - Special Offer $89
A traditional expression from Jasper Hill. Great farmers, great transmitters of house style, great lo-fi approach to winemaking.
Bold and rich red of intensity, ripeness of fruit, flesh and pummeling tannin. Inky, ripe plummy fruit, huge dusting of brown spices, violets, touches of pepper and waves of thick, minerally, woody tannin. Composed, intense and powerful, it’s a memorable wine of generosity and penetrating presence.

2017 Georgia's Paddock Shiraz
Usually $89 - Special Offer $85
Shiraz in Georgia’s Paddock in 2017 was really high cropping, but the quality was also there, says Emily Laughton, with an addendum that rain interspersed through ripening and picking drew out the season, to produce a relatively more elegant wine. “Georgia’s tends to be a more fruit driven wine”.
Mellow fog of perfume, dark cherries, faint lavender, warm forest berry compote, faint mint and fennel and a whiff of clove. Moody, lovely perfume. Fleshy textured but with defined ribbons of tannin, flavours dark, brooding, earthy, and drawn long. Seamless flow, superb ‘seasoning’ of oak, velvety but with enough grip to tune the palate. Excellent wine.

2019 Emily's Paddock Shiraz Cabernet Franc
750ml Usually $125 - Special Offer $119
Ripe plum, green olive, nougat and brown spice, lots of oak, lots of booze-soaked ripe fruit. All does well in its way. Slick and rich to taste, supple and flows well, all components well integrated, exceptional length and palate-staining persistence with a slightly too breathy finish, but you get the gist its going to work out. Chunky, chewy, deep but with good flow. Bold, big red done well.

2017 Emily's Paddock Shiraz Cabernet Franc
750ml Usually $125 - Special Offer $119
Dark fruits, slippery, unctuous texture, more sinew to tannins through the finish. Perfume of dark berries, blackberry, faint fennel, choc mint, the whiff of wood spice and a general sense of moody, dark fruit. The palate is strong, lush, drives intensity and vigour, bound up and ready for cellar time. Superb wine.
