2017 Domaine Roger Sabon et Fils

Roger Sabon is a terrific source of outstanding benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape where vineyard work, the expression of fruit and terroir is everything. Tronconic vats for fermentations and elevage alongside the concrete and steel vats are used which is common to the region’s best producers. Sabon makes velvety wines with silky concentration, flesh and finesse utilising modern foudrés and second-use casks for elevage for the top wine ‘Secret’. Jean-Jacque Sabon’s son-in-law Didier Negron has been in charge for over a decade now and has raised the bar at this already first-class benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer. The 2017s are concentrated, pure, rich, silky, full yet beautifully balanced with freshness.

2017 Chateauneuf-du-Pape'Les Olivets'
Usually $89 - Special Offer $84
A blend of 80% Grenache with 10% each Cinsault and Syrah, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape les Olivets is a terrific success. Peppery notes accent hints of roses and raspberries on the nose of this full-bodied, creamy textured beauty. It slides easily across the palate, finishing long and plush yet with great depth at the same time. It should drink well for up to 15 years. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes. 2020-2035

2017 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Reserve'
Usually $105 - Special Offer $99
Inky in hue but resoundingly floral and packed with red berries and black cherries, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve is full-bodied and rich, yet it never seems heavy or overdone, with silky tannins and refreshing savory hints of herb, Asian spices and cracked pepper on the lengthy finish. It's probably the best value among the various cuvées this year. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes. 2020 – 2035

2017 Chateauneuf-du-Pape'Cuvee Prestige'
Usually $159 - Special Offer $149
Including more Syrah, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige is 70% Grenache 20% Mourvèdre, and the rest Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. While it’s brought up mostly in foudre, it has 10% in demi-muids and 30% in cuve tronconique. With thrilling purity of fruit, notes of black raspberries, blackberries, ground pepper,
garrigue, and a distinct sense of minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, sweet tannins, a beautifully opulent texture, and a great finish. It's another rock star of a 2017 from superstar winemaker Didier Negron.

2017 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Le Secret des Sabon'
Extremely Limited - $549
On another level, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Secret Des Sabon is stacked and packed and ranks with the top 2-3 wines in this great vintage. A huge nose of blackcurrants, melted licorice, graphite, garrigue and pepper gives way to an uber-full-bodied, concentrated, massively endowed wine that has an insane level of opulence and decadent, sweet tannins, and a huge finish. This is a tour de force in wine that readers need to taste to believe. Given its wealth of fruit and texture, it’s already approachable, yet a solid 4-5 years of bottle age are warranted, and it's going to keep for 25 years or more. Bravo! As always, this cuvée is a field blend that’s 95% Grenache, with the balance a mix of varieties, mostly from sandy soils, brought up in oak tronconique tanks. 2023 – 2048
