Under the Mosel-born Franzen, this historic Estate has become known for producing some of Pfalz’s most ethereal and fine-boned wines... A far crythen, from the Pfalz’s upfront, stand-and-deliver norm. That said, without dialling down Catoir’s traditional “calmer mineral style” (to quote Stuart Pigott), the wines here have been gradually evolving towards a more expressive, textural and intense style.
Trendy or otherwise, there is no debate to be found in Muller Catoir’s current release... They are a bundle of energy and detail; dense, sculpted and crystalline fruits vibrate atop exuberant acidity and Haardt’s distinctive, intense core of smoky minerality. Those in the know should not hesitate. And, if you do not know the wines, there has never been a better time to familiarise yourself.

2019 Riesling Haardter Burgergarten Im Breumel GG

Like the first rosebud of the season that has fully colored, but is only just beginning to open up, this is full of promise. Densely packed with minerals and positive tannins that are neatly wrapped in creaminess from lees contact, this is locked into its own time frame. You really need to give it a lot of air for the mirabelle, nectarine and mandarin notes to emerge. Then there’s a stunning interplay of fruit and structure through the long, very complete finish.
