Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of Distinction - Lethbridge

Lethbridge

‘Our belief is that the best wines express the unique character of special places’
Ray Nadeson, Winemaker

Founded by three scientists, Ray Nadeson, Maree Collis and Adrian Thomas, Lethbridge Wines has been crafting superb wines in the Geelong region since 1996. Using all the technical sensibilities one would expect from a group of scientists, the trio chose their site at Lethbridge with soil types, vineyard aspect, rainfall in mind. The same level of precise attention is also present in the cellar, where a more hands-off approach is taken, allowing for a true expression of terroir. The results are some of the most distinctive and captivating expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the region.

2019 Chardonnay
Usually $48 - Special Offer $42

A savoury, mealy style of chardonnay, a nice contrast to the top-tier Allegra. Plenty of barrel ferment complexity, together with almond, nougat, pear and lovely spiciness. Melds beautifully on the palate with quince, grilled nuts and mandarin rind. Harmonious oak. Quite the complex number for a wine so young.

Golden colour. Rich, bruised apple and pear, mint, butter menthol, saline and nutty. It’s glossy and has an oatmeal richness, but has firm zesty ripe lemon acidity, a lot of power, nutty and buttery, slightly warm, and very long. That theme of oxidative richness and distinct salinity makes it kind of Jura-like (Jurassic?) in style. It’s a wine that will appeal to some more than others, for sure, but it’s really very good.

2019 Pinot Noir
Usually $48 - Special Offer $42

Ray Nadeson writes some of the most lyrical wine labels going. His hope with this wine is to reveal tannins that feel 'like you are melting into a soft cushion'. Well, they are certainly supple. A big proponent of whole-bunch fermentation, his '19 is striking in its structure and force of personality, with an imposing herbal imprint, chocolate cherry and red berries. Balance of oak/fruit/tannin is impressive, but the sustained length is that and more.

Jeni Port, The Wine Companion

Spicy, cherry and chocolate, dried herb and liquorice. It’s medium-bodied, combines all the sappy/spicy/savoury/fruity things, with a sort of honey nut richness, firm shapely coal dust tannin, meaty and slightly sour-edged to close, with excellent length and no shortage of character. It’s not a ‘pretty’ Pinot, more guttural and earthy, but a very good one nonetheless.
