A New Burgundy Producer Appears On Our Radar!

Domaine Pernot Belicard

This small six-hectare domaine located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet is making rapid strides. Philippe Pernot (a scion of the Paul Pernot dynasty) launched the Pernot Belicard label in 2009, gradually selling less and less to the négociants. In the vineyards, he cultivates the soils, de-buds aggressively and takes pains to retain his old vines in good health. The grapes are harvested by hand, with Philippe typically among the earlier pickers in the village. Since 2014, there’s more sorting, the grapes passing over a shaker table before being whole cluster pressed. Initially, the wines were bottled to make room for the new vintage, but Philippe, evidently an enquiring mind, felt that something was missing: now, the wines stay in barrel until August, but spend an additional three to six months in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with the fine lees. The result, he contends (and I concur), are wines that are more integrated and complete. These are already very good wines, and Philippe possesses some enviable parcels, but it is his desire to refine and improve that marks this out as an estate to watch.

2020 Bourgogne Blanc
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

All vineyards are located above the old RN74. Fullish lemon yellow and green. Lively greengage notes, suggesting plenty of flesh yet still fresh. Yellow fruit, a little bit fleshy at the back and the oak shows strongly despite being half made in tank.

The 2020 Bourgogne Côte d’Or has quite an intense nose with white flower and white linen scents. The palate is well balanced, quite tangy with orange zest and a dab of marmalade enlivening the finish. Very fine for its class.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet
Usually $185 - Special Offer $179

This year the wine comes from two additional plots from Domaine Pernot, Petit Nosroyes and Boudrières plus existing Belicard vines. The mix gives a good balance of ages and styles. Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is a little fresher without as much oak influence though still with 20% new wood. I like the persistence across the palate, still quite a thick texture though with an attractive streak of acidity through the middle. Notably more persistent than the Meursault.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a crisp, green apple and freshly sliced Nashi pear scented nose that springs from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little waxy in texture with good depth on the finish. This is a classy Puligny Village.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Champ Gain'
Usually $265 - Special Offer $255

From vines purchased in 2011, towards the Truffière side of the vineyard. Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet is quite discreet though with some finesse. The oak shows much less here, and the fruit builds quite attractively towards the back of the palate. Some fresh but ripe citrus notes nicely integrated. Persistent.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Champ Canet'
Usually $265 - Special Offer $255

Planted on the Meursault Perrières side in 2004 and singing already! Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is lively and refreshing, yet with a sense of ripeness and concentration in support. This has elegance on the attack then a more complex concentration of fruit behind, again with a little more oak than I would like, but here the essential quality of the fruit will win through, and already is on the palate.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Perrieres'
Usually $265 - Special Offer $255

The domaine’s biggest plot and oldest vines, 1955, on 3309 and 5BB rootstock. Mineral at the top of the plot, more humid below. Slightly paler in colour and a little more chiselled on the nose. Some yellow plums but also a ripe apple note behind, a little wood and definitely some weight inform the finish. Champ Canet has more precision, Perrières has greater depth of fruit. Your choice.

2020 Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Perrieres Dessous'
Usually $399 - Special Offer $379

From a 1974 planting. Pure pale lemon yellow colour. An immediately opulent nose after the range of Puligny 1ers crus. 13.5% and one of the first to be picked. A very light toastiness shows here. Builds strongly on the palate, mostly pear fruit with perhaps a mango note, suggests Philippe. But not at all in the tropical fruit style previously so popular in other parts of the world. Pretty good length and the weight of fruit has tamed the oak. Interesting complex nuances including a touch of menthol at the finish. Indeed, properly persistent.
