The Geelong region is home to some of Australia's great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Today, we have two of our favourite producers from this world-class wine growing region; Lethbridge and Bannockburn.
Both Lethbridge and Bannockburn take advantage of the region's particularly long, dry and cool Autumns to produce wines of immense character and concentration. Without a doubt, these two are among a handful of Geelong's top producers, and these charming releases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are absolutely testament to that.

2020 Chardonnay

From a difficult year and a small crop comes a stunning chardonnay, packed in flavour and budding complexity. White stone fruit, citrus, mandarin rind, mango skin and spice all roam and build on the palate in tandem with a delicious honeycomb creamy texture. Acidity wields a powerful, invigorating presence.

2020 Pinot Noir

It attracts first with its captivating aroma, earthy, mushroomy, enticing with some exotic dark cherry and wet leaves or forest floor. Following the alluring scent, there is the anticipation of taste and if you have chosen well, expect some intoxicating flavours of dark cherry with undercurrents of earth and spice. Finally to texture, the perception of which relates to our sense of touch, a great Pinot Noir will be supple, smooth and silky. You will ‘feel’ this wine in your mouth and if it is great Pinot Noir the taste will persist and you will want more.

Bannockburn
2021 was particularly difficult for the team at Bannockburn; as such, the fruit that would usually be destined for the Serre Pinot Noir has been included in this year's Estate Release.

2021 Chardonnay

Grown on a range of vineyards across the Bannockburn holdings, from 1976 plantings through to the most recent (2016). 20% new oak, with 70% of the final wine going through malo.
Bannockburn chardonnay is never short of flavour and so to this release, though the fresh zing of the finish brings a more modern twist, arguably. Pear, grapefruit, peach, cracked wheat and cedar flavours come strong and convincing, aided by citrus and fennel notes, the latter especially notable on the finish. The flavour of tinned pear here is as strong as it is delicious, it must be noted. This is an excellent release; it’s good for drinking now but it has many years up its sleeve.

2021 Pinot Noir

Bannockburn has never really been out of form but I get the feeling that winemaker Matt Holmes and team have the ship about where they want it to be, now.
This is a beauty. Fragrant and attractive from the outset but then expansive on the palate as well. Earth, twigs, root vegetables and cherries with woodsy spice notes rippling throughout. Tension and flow, texture and tannin. There’s a smoky meatiness to the aftertaste, mixed in with decaying red roses, and it’s most attractive way for the wine to sail out. Drink it now, drink it later; it will deliver.
