Sublime Nebbiolo From The Italian Alps

by Hugh French | Jun 01, 2022

The Nebbiolo Of Italy's Far North

As Nebbiolo lovers, we are always looking for new and exciting producers. Recently we had the opportunity to taste a couple of delicious new Nebbiolo based wines from Alto Piemonte producer Antoniotti Odilio.

Alto Piemonte or High Piedmont is located about 150km North-East of Piedmont at the base of the Italian Alps. Thanks to the unique terroir and altitude, they produce fragrant, complex, mineral and age-worthy wines.

We also have the new vintage release of 2020 ARPEPE Rosso di Valtellina. In 2020 most of the crus were declassified and blended into the Rosso, making for an exceptional release.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days. To place your order, simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or call us on 03 9419 6990.

Antoniotti Odilio

The Antoniotti family is synonymous with Bramaterra, an Alto Piemonte appellation. The region, including the provinces of Biella and Vercelli, produces Nebbiolo of great prestige, finesse and ageing potential.

The Antoniotti winery stands on the hills of Bramaterra in the village of Casa del Bosco, where the family has been producing wine since 1861 when they purchased (planted?) the very first hectares. In 1997, seventh-generation winemaker Odilio took the helm of the family business, and today, with his son Mattia, cultivates Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina and Uva Rara on the 5 hectares of family vineyards.

The climate is exceptional: the area is sunny and well-ventilated. The vines rest on rocky porphyry soils, acidic and rich in iron and manganese, which impart a unique character to the wine. Herbicides are not used in the vineyard, and copper and sulphur are only used in limited quantities.

There are two ancient concrete tanks in the cellar dug directly into the rock, one in 1901 and the other in 1920. Cement acts as a natural thermal regulator: in this way, the grape must always remains at an ideal temperature. The wines are left to ferment on indigenous yeasts and mature in large barrels for at least 30 months.

Odilio Antoniotti produces breath taking wines and is a local hero in the Bramaterra D.O.C.

2017 Bramaterra DOC
Usually $99 - Special Offer $89

"Youthful crimson ruby. Great depth of marasca cherry on the nose with savoury-minerally hints. Recognisably Nebbiolo but really distinct from Barolo or Barbaresco. More of an alpine character combined with the concentration of the very warm and dry 2017 vintage. Just a hint of herbs and then concentrated cherry fruit with marzipan-like tannins adding great grip to the finish. Can be approached now but ideally should get more time in the bottle. Great bargain compared with Barolo."
17++/20
Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com

The wine is characterized by oriental spices, balsamic notes and minerality. Elegant, with fine tannins well balanced by a pleasant freshness and savoury taste.

ARPEPE

"These wines from Ar.Pe.Pe. (an abbreviation of founder Arturo Pelizzatti Perego's initials) are among the most impressive I tasted...From top to bottom, the wines are deserving of serious attention. The super-traditional style will leave lovers of translucent Nebbiolo weak at the knees. Ar.Pe.Pe. releases many of their top wines with a good bit of bottle age, which makes them terrific choices for readers looking for Nebbiolo with the nuances that can only develop over time. Perhaps most importantly, Ar.Pe.Pe. shows just how pedigreed the wines of Valtellina can be."

"Ar.Pe.Pe. is the bastion of traditionalism in Valtellina. Readers with classically leaning palates will flip out over the wines."
Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
