The Colin family is revered throughout Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, with a storied history and penchant for crafting exceptional wines of distinction. Indeed, many of its members run prominent Domaines in Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Joseph Colin initially trained at Domaine Marc Colin, working alongside his brother, Pierre-Yves, to make the family wines. In 2016, Joseph decided to create his own Domaine, and, subsequently, inherited just over six hectares of vineyards from his family holdings, representing about nineteen different appellations, to start his exciting new venture.

Simon (28, above), the son of Philippe Colin, has his garage winery in Chassagne-Montrachet. He began with nine barrels of wine in 2017 and in 2020 he had 28 – all through contracts. Simon calls this negociant operation his laboratory: “When I started I didn’t have a lot of equipment but I think that’s how my grandfather and his father probably began their operations too. I just trust what I see! We have Bourgogne, Bouzeron and Rully at the base of the range, Chassagne in the middle and the premiers towards the top.” Simon started with his dad in 2014 but decided to go his own way in 2017 and did an internship at Sauzet at the same time.

Over the last ten years, Nicole Lamarche has steered this Domaine back to Vosne’s top table. As we have said before, precise organic viticulture, low yields, and very delicate handling of the grapes in the cellar are the keys to the quality and style achieved here. Here we have another release that verifies the continuing evolution of this dynamic grower.

This is certainly a domaine that works hard to produce the best wines that they can. They are one of a rare breed of producers that (vintage permitting) ferment using 100% whole clusters. As a result the wines are lighter in colour, but no less flavourful, indeed they usually show an extra level of complexity.

Arnaud Mortet is making better wines than ever... Mortet presides over an enviable set of vineyards, including a number of Premier and Grand Crus. Whereas in the past I found some wines excessively oaked, as evinced by a vertical I participated in a couple of years ago, nowadays the wines mirror those of Trapet: much more precise, detailed and mineral-driven, much more expressive of their terroirs.

Located in the heart of the village Aloxe-Corton, Domaine Follin-Arbelet operates and makes wine a great range of titles on the town and its surroundings, composed of three Grands Crus red, a Grand Cru white, red four First Growths, and a designation Village, the wine is representative of the best soils of the hillside of Corton.
When asked what inspires him the most, Franck responded, “wine that represents its terroir and a job well done.” Simply put; not so simply executed—but tasting the wines of Domaine Follin-Arbelet is not only inspirational—it is a revelation.
