"Pretty pink purple. This has the valuable slight reduction that stops the vintage escaping. The nose is tight therefore, though with some wild cherries. There is plenty of wine in the mouth but with some delicacy, just the right tannins. Really fine pure finish"

2018 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru 'Aux Brulees'

"The 2018 Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulees 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0 alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent."

2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Charmois'

"A cooler if slightly less complex nose features the relatively high-toned essence of red currant, floral and humus. There is both good energy and delineation to the unusually sophisticated mouthfeel for a Nuits villages, all wrapped in a finer if again slightly less complex finale. However, I suspect that this will add depth once it has been bottled and this too is one to look for."

2018 Richebourg Grand Cru

"Etienne took a moment to reminisce about the cost price of this vineyard back in 1984. You might have to pay as much for a single vine now as they did per ouvrée then. Maybe not, but you might only get a dozen vines. The 2018 has wonderfully gorgeous fruit - too easy to say, and in fact it is starting out quite tight for the moment. More red than black. Three minutes of sniffing to coax it out. Does it fill the mouth? Yes; What about class? Yes; Too ripe? No; Balanced? Yes, with intensity as well of course. Watch those boxes being ticked. Etienne speaks of the orient, vigorous and sensual, a bit of an old souk."
