Beaujolais Royalty - Alex Foillard

by Hugh French | Oct 24, 2022

Alex Foillard

"As I've written before, Alexandre Foillard continues to establish himself as one of the most talented members of Beaujolais's young generation...Given the family's reputation, Foillard Jr.'s wines are already very much an open secret, but they are worth seeking out."
William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

Jean Foillard doesn’t need much of an introduction. His Côte du Py, one of the iconic wines of contemporary France, is as pure and captivating as Beaujolais gets.

Alex, Jean's eldest son,in 2021 is in charge of the everyday running of the family winery for his father where he also makes his own wines. In fact, you may have tasted his work in the 'Jean Foillard' wines in the last few vintages too.

Like Jean's wines, they also have a seductive aromatic component, a silky texture, and a downright deliciousness that is unmistakably Foillard. After all, Alex uses well-honed family techniques to craft his wines - whole-cluster fermentation with natural yeasts; their version of carbonic maceration.

2020 Brouilly
Usually $79 - Special Offer $69

"Alex Foillard’s Brouilly comes from the aptly named 'La Folie' (Madness), a steep vineyard just above Reverdon. The general rule is that Brouilly is the Côte de Brouilly’s slightly softer, more sensuous sibling and Foillard’s is a glorious example."
Importer Notes, Andrew Guard

2020 Cote de Brouilly
Usually $79 - Special Offer $69

"From the north-facing lieu-dit Chavannes, with soils of granite and schist and a thin layer of sandy soils over the top. This area provides for wines with distinct minerality and finesse. This wine has a beautiful wild strawberry and red cherry character and is attractively taut and fresh in the mouth where it's finesse and precision give way to a gorgeous succulence and very refreshing and pretty finish. If these two wines were playing in a wine Orchestra together then this would be the Violin to the Brouilly's Viola. All in all, here are two superb Cru Beaujolais of finesse, definition and clarity."
Importer Notes, Andrew Guard
