Garagiste - More Superb Releases From Mornington

by Hugh French | Feb 03, 2023

Garagiste

"Anyone with even a passing interest in cool-climate Australia will already know that Garagiste is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars. Barnaby Flanders created the Garagiste label following his amicable split with Allies co-founder David Chapman (who continues with the Allies label). ‘Barney’ now focuses on a snug range of small-batch wines from fruit sourced from the highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, the Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring), and the Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Garagiste, the main label, is ably supported by delicious entry-level wines under the Le Stagiaire banner."

2022 Le Stagiere Chardonnay
Usually $34 - Special Offer $29

2021 Le Stagiere Chardonnay
Usually $34 - Special Offer $29

"This has to be the best value chardonnay from the peninsula matched to quality but also, this vintage has delivered the finest to date. It’s superbly balanced with pristine fruit, the right amount of flinty sulphides, savouriness, texture and definition. There’s some tension on the palate, a purity to the acidity and excellent length. What a wine."

2022 Le Stagiere Pinot Noir
Usually $34 - Special Offer $29

2021 Le Stagiere Pinot Noir
Usually $34 - Special Offer $29

"While there’s a flutter of cherries and spice with plum fruit sweetness across the palate, this is a much more savoury offering than usual. Lighter framed, with peach-fuzz tannins, raspberry-sorbet acidity and freshness throughout. Good to pour now."

2022 Tuerong Aligote
Usually $37 - Special Offer $33

2021 Tuerong Aligote
Usually $37 - Special Offer $33

"Barnaby Flanders can only source a small amount of aligoté, but he weaves magic with the fruit anyway. Layers of flavour and depth: lemon, tart apple and stone fruit dance along with savoury, smoky notes. A whisper of sulphides and a smidge of nutty lees is teasing out the otherwise tight palate, led by a line of excellent acidity."

2022 Tuerong Chardonnay
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

2021 Tuerong Chardonnay
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

"Whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeast, matured on lees for 10 months in French puncheons, 20% new. Plenty of flavour and succulence across the palate, yet it remains taut thanks to its acidity. Grapefruit, dried fig, oak spice, lemon curd and creamy lees come together on the flavour spectrum. A cracking wine."

2022 Merricks Chardonnay
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

2021 Merricks Chardonnay
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

"Made the same as its Tuerong sibling, so site trumps everything. This is sublime. Flinty, spicy, citrusy and intense, in a good and satisfying way. The palate glides with such precision thanks to minerally fresh acidity. Mornington Peninsula chardonnay, but perhaps not as you know it. Bravo."

2022 Merricks Pinot Noir
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

2021 Merricks Pinot Noir
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

"Of the 2 single-vineyard wines (the other Balnarring), Merricks is making a statement in ’21 – look at me. It’s not big, but it packs a punch. The 50% whole bunches in the ferment have imparted Italian flavours of chinotto, amaro and Mediterranean herbs with a distinct ferrous-stony note. Pop and crunch to the acidity and raw-silk tannins in harmony across the even palate. A stylish and super-savoury drink."

2021 Balnarring Pinot Noir
Usually $49 - Special Offer $44

"A savoury stamp this vintage, that decompresses the slight sweet-cherry accent into a minor component. Chinese five-spice, chinotto, wood smoke and a smatter of dried herbs form the core of flavours. But texture is key. Fine sandpaper tannins and the mouth-watering acidity leads everything to a decisive, slightly dry finish. An austere, compelling style."
