Peay Vineyards and Littorai - Sonoma Coast Superstars

by Hugh French | Feb 15, 2023

Peay Vineyards & Littorai

When it comes to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of immense elegance and power, look no further than Peay Vineyards and Littorai.

Ted Lemon began Littorai in 1993 after returning home to the US following extensive experience, working for some of the greatest Domaines in Burgundy, most notably as winemaker and vineyard manager at the prestigious Domaine Roulot. Now considered a hero of the American wine industry, Ted creates what can only be described as the most highly regarded Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the US today.

The team of Andy and Nick Peay, alongside the winemaking wife of Nick, Vanessa Wong, searched tirelessly along the western coast of America to find the perfect site for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their search ended at the current 35-acre site of Peay Vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, an extremely marginal site that yields tiny crops but delivers intense purity and freshness. In this incredibly remote site, the trio craft delicious wines that are as unique and beautiful as their vineyard (see below).

Peay Vineyards

The Peay wines have been compelling for a number of years. This year's lineup is especially stellar.

Peay is in the middle of nowhere. Literally. Reaching the sprawling, rugged estate is an adventure in and of itself. A collection of hillside sites with multiple exposures set within undeveloped forest, Peay is one of the most marginal sites for growing grapes, even within the context of the Sonoma Coast. Two tonnes per acre, the bare minimum for most vineyards, is a rare occurrence. The wines, though, are usually terrific and often magnificent. Readers who have not discovered Peay owe it to themselves to do so. The Pinots, in particular, are worthy of note.

2020 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
Usually $124 - Special Offer $114

"For the first time, the 2020 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is made entirely from Chardonnay grown on our vineyard and walks the line between two worlds; capturing the silky texture and pleasure of the New World and the structure and verve of the Old World... The nose is exotic and engaging with lemon meringue and buttered brioche aromas touched off by a hint of flint smoke. The fruit on the palate adds a little baked lemon and crème brulee notes. The texture on the palate is silky and the various aromas are knit together and harmonious making this wine ready to enjoy now. The wine finishes with a freshness and a hint of saltiness. The next day the wine had lost some of the young, baby fat characteristics (crème brulee, brioche) and more minerality came to the fore. Drink now or hold for 3-5 years."

2020 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Usually $124 - Special Offer $114

"The 2020 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a lovely appellation-level wine. Crushed red berries, spice, floral top notes and a touch of blood orange give this tasty, ethereal Pinot a good bit of brightness and enough complexity to support fine drinking over the next few years."

Littorai

There is no doubt in my mind Littorai is one of this country’s crown jewel wineries. Proprietor Ted Lemon has the magic touch with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

2021 Les Larmes Pinot Noir
Usually $154 - Special Offer $144

As always, the 2021 Les Larmes is a blend of the Littorai individual vineyard parcels. Surpassing what could be considered a mere regional expression, the Les Larmes offers a distinct sense of place and reveals a sum that delivers more than its parts. Fine and age-worthy, this is absolutely a wine of character that is worth getting a hold of.

2020 Wendling Vineyard Block E Pinot Noir
Usually $209 - Special Offer $195

"The 2020 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E is a quiet wine in 2020, but that is the vintage. The unique fruit and flavor profile of this site is present, but in a decidedly attenuated style. Red berry fruit, blood orange, rose petal, mint and sweet spice build into the soft, caressing finish."

2020 Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $209 - Special Offer $195

"Strawberries, sliced lemons, hibiscus and rose. Medium body, fine tannins and a crisp finish. Some slate and stone. Drink now."

"The 2020 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard is precise, understated and very pretty. Sweet macerated cherry, dried flowers, mint, sage and cedar lend notable aromatic brilliance to this mid-weight, nuanced Anderson Valley Pinot. I especially like the energy. There's good weight and density here, too."

2020 Mays Canyon Pinot Noir
Usually $219 - Special Offer $205

"A 2020 with some real depth and richness, showing hibiscus and orange-peel aromas and flavors, as well as notes of dried strawberry, white pepper, crushed stone and lime skin. Needs time to open and soften, but already impressive. Drink after 2024."

2020 Cerise Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $219 - Special Offer $205

"Aromas of bright strawberries and orange peel with salt and oyster shell. Medium to full body. Slate and walnut with white pepper and stone. So much cloves at the end. Loads going on here in a complex and intense way."

"The 2020 Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard is a classic Ted Lemon wine. Bright, focused and wonderfully translucent, the 2020 is light in body yet has plenty of flavor. Crushed red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper and mint all run through this taut, nervy Anderson Valley Pinot."
