The Astonishing Burn Cottage

by Hugh French | Feb 24, 2023

Burn Cottage

“It feels like a whole life ago I stood at the original Burn Cottage vineyard and looked at its verdant glory – early days, but geez, the wildlife, the flowers, the bees and insects and hairy staff (aside Claire Mulholland), it had it all. And still does..."
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

Every Burn Cottage release is a landmark. This estate strutted onto the Central Otago stage with such style and swagger in the late noughties that it immediately made a mark. It was also so respectful of nature and place that it was championed by its peers. It was more start-up than upstart, with characterful hard-rocking American Marquis Sauvage as visionary owner, a guru-like vineyard architect in Ted Lemon, and biodynamic viticulture as its cutting-edge tech.

2020 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir
Usually $69 - Special Offer $64

"Straight up delicious. Easy drinking but with enough going on to settle the pinot nerds. Dark cherry, sappy tannins, fresh feeling and lifted, a bit of spice to finish. Feels unadorned and pure, cool and refreshing in a way. Delicious drinking, on cruise control and super appealing. Great to see such unadorned and fresh feeling wines."

2019 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $99 - Special Offer $94

"Cherries, flowers and sweet spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Round and creamy with a caressing texture and a fruity edge. Long finish. Fresh and very fine. Elegant is the word. From organically grown grapes."

2020 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $105 - Special Offer $98

"It’s tightly wound and cinched with fine, silty tannins. Perfume is a little mute, but that’s ok, dark cherry, a bit of flinty minerality, new leather, kirsch and dark chocolate apparent. Flavours similar but strongly minerally, briny acidity a feature, orangey acidity and a cool breeze of bergamot piquancy-bitterness in the mix. Succulent as all get out too, kinda refreshing all up. A beauty.”
