In 1988 Michael Hill Smith had just completed the gruelling Master of Wine examination. The following year, teaming up with cousin Martin Shaw, Shaw + Smith was founded. The vision being a 'virtual winery' with a steadfast commitment to sourcing only the best fruit from the best growers.
1999 saw the purchase of the current property in Balhannah, with the first Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in 2000. Now with greater vine age, those plantings offer more depth and complexity, and the inclusion of Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz (Len Evans Tutorial Dux) has solidified the continuing commitment to the highest quality wines.
These wines always fetch fantastic scores from critics across the board. The new release from Shaw + Smith once again achieves the extremely high standard that has come to be expected from this top-class Adelaide Hills producer. 2021 Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay

'"A fine boned Chardonnay that reflects the conditions of the vintage and the character of this unique vineyard site. Pale lemon straw colour. Restrained on the nose, with white flowers and a touch of struck match. A long, fine, and delicate palate but with underlying intensity of fruit, with chamomile, lemon pith and slightly under-ripe nectarine notes. Understated, with purity and finesse, but there is also texture and drive that hint at the great potential to age"

"A Pinot Noir of delicacy and fragrance, with fresh acid, and subtle layers of flavour and texture. Already open and expressive on the nose, with red fruit and spice. Bursting with flavour on the palate, with cherry, strawberry, and raspberry, toasted spices, and flowing through to firm but very fine tannins on the finish. Remarkable intensity for a wine so light on its feet."

2020 Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz

"A complex, finely-textured Shiraz expressing the conditions of each vintage and the character of a unique vineyard site. A complex nose as always with this wine, with fennel seed, spiced plum, and dried sage notes. The cool and low yielding season is evident in the red fruit, freshness and drive of this wine. The whole bunch is carried effortlessly by the fruit, and the tannins are long and ripe and even. A wine with huge ageing potential, and the balance and flesh that make it delicious as a young wine as well."
