"Margherita Otto is a recent outfit in Barolo, but its owner, American ex-wine merchant and ex-restaurateur Alan Manley, is anything but. For years he has worked for Maria Teresa Mascarello of the legendary Bartolo Mascarello estate and Sandrone. Years ago, while totally infatuated with Nebbiolo (“Pinot Noir isn’t my thing”, he told me. “How refreshing”, I replied), Manley came over from the US to the holy grail of Nebbiolo in order to do a harvest in Barolo. Luciano Sandrone said, “why don’t you come and work with me?” It was like Keith Richard saying, "I'll teach you how to play guitar", is how Manley recalled this moment."

"A stellar vintage for Nebbiolo, characterised by a cool growing period from early September creating a highly aromatic and elegant vintage with acidity and freshness in abundance. Alan’s Neb was made almost wholly from a small part of vines registered as Nebbiolo Langhe in the Vignane MGA (in Barolo, next to Castellero) as well as some declassified fruit from the Barolo parcels. 2021 was fermented on skins for about 10-12 days before being racked to preserve fruit and freshness. It went through malo in steel and was transferred to a single 1000L Mittelberger botti for ageing"

Margherita Otto’s 2019 Barolo is classic, offering aromas of woodland berry, camphor, rose and underbrush while the elegant palate delivers ripe red cherry, blood orange and licorice before closing on a mineral note recalling rusty nail. Taut, refined tannins and vibrant acidity provide seamless support and impeccable balance. All about extreme finesse and precision, it also promises great aging potential so give it time to fully develop."
