Challenges Overcome - 2021 Burgundy

by Hugh French | Sep 19, 2023

The 2021 Burgundy Vintage is Finally Here!

The 2021 vintage seems to be one that will go down in infamy as severe weather patterns devastated crops almost universally across France. With up to as much as an 80% loss in yields the outlook was especially dire in Burgundy. However, with a rich history and commitment to quality, many vignerons adapted to the challenges; a trait that no doubt has contributed to maintaining its position at the top of premium wine growing regions. In 2021, those who were able to adapt and manage the difficulties faced, delivered wines of finesse, elegance and transparency of underlying terroir.

With so many wines available in this offer, we have put together a special order form with scores and pricing that you can find HERE

Many of these are available in tiny quantities so get in early to secure your allocation.

Domaine A & P de Villaine

When Aubert de Villaine came to Burgundy to take charge of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1971, he set up home in the village of Bouzeron and began to put together a private domaine independent of DRC. The domaine began conversion to organic farming in 1986, becoming certified in 1997. Aubert de Villaine handed over management to his nephew Pierre de Benoist in 2000. Pierre de Benoist is passionate about rediscovering the identity of the Côte Chalonnaise as a whole and of Bouzeron in particular – as well as the Aligoté grape in its original golden form.

Marc-Antonin Blain

Growing from strength to strength, the young Marc-Antonin Blain continues to forge his way as one of the Cote d'Or's finest young talents. Growing up surrounded by wine, Marc-Antonin's parents, Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard fostered a love for the Burgundy region and its wine. After finishing his studies in Beaune, Marc-Antonin ventured to Australia, where he spent vintages at two of our greatest wine producers, Giaconda and Cullen. Leaving this to return home to Burgundy, Marc-Antonin inherited vineyards previously tended by his grandfather, Jacques Gagnard-Delagrange.

Domaine Blain-Gagnard

This is one of the finest white Burgundy estates, where the wine-making involves minimal intervention. It is run by Jean-Marc Blain and his wife Claudine, and the family owns some of the village’s greatest hillsides. New oak barrels are never used to excess, being subtly spread amongst the different cuvées so that spicy oakiness is never perceptible here. Blain is also prudent with stirring-up of the lees (bâtonnage). The finished wines have great purity of fruit, with balanced acidity and long, clean flavours.

Domaine Jacques Carillon

"As readers may remember, the Carillon family has deep roots in Puligny-Montrachet, dating back to at least 1520, and intermarried with the Virot family—the late François Virot being the régisseur of Domaine Leflaive in its glory days. Brothers Jacques and François worked together with their father, Louis, but parted ways after the 2009 vintage, ending the Louis Carillon label and inaugurating domaines of their own. Winemaking chez Jacques is simple: the grapes are harvested by hand, pneumatically pressed, fermented and matured in barrel for a year, before being racked to tank for a further six months' élevage. Neither smoke nor mirrors, just classic white Burgundy."

Domaine Follin Arbelet

Follin Arbelet produces exceptional wines from prime Coteau de Corton terroirs, encompassing various appellations such as Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, Corton, and Romanee Saint Vivant. They work sustainably, employing hand-picked grapes and native yeasts for fermentation in open-top oak vats. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, utilizing 15 to 75% new barrels based on the appellation, resulting in polished, well-balanced wines known for their intense fruit and vibrancy.
