Lowestoft sits high on a hill overlooking the Derwent River and across to MONA and these days, in what was once the front garden, lies a fabulous 3ha close-planted vineyard of old-vine Pinot Noir planted in 1986.
Until recently the fruit was sold off to other winemakers. Since Lowestoft was established as a producer in its own right, it has garnered critical praise and many trophies and medals from wine shows around the country.

"100% Coal River Valley chardonnay; hand picked; whole-bunch pressed; wild fermented and aged 9 months in seasoned French oak barrels; 50% with sulphur dioxide and 50% without, with 3 months bâtonnage. The Fogarty Group has made quite a splash in Tasmania and wines like this make a serious statement about their confidence to play at the top end. The cool 2020 season defines impressive flinty, mineral texture and enduring acid drive, energising perfectly ripe white fruits and impeccably integrated oak."

"Tasted alongside the 2019, and while 2020 was a cooler vintage, it also seems to have received a more subtle touch in the winery, which is good. I could be wrong! Subtle wine, all crunch and saline/mineral stuff, discreet spicy oak, pink grapefruit and fennel, fine dusty texture, and a cool feel to it, with salted citrus, and subtle umami flavours, and a long finish that feels good and ‘natural’. Not the power of the 2019, but more stylish, and better to drink. So lovely."

"Pale straw in the glass with aromas of white peach, nectarine and grapefruit with a nicely dialled-in struck match/sulphide nuance and hints of soft spice, oatmeal, white flowers, nougat, lemon curd and clotted cream. There is impressive detail, clarity and composition here with a long, wonderfully expressive pure flow across the palate on rails of mineral and stone, not a hair out of place, a picture of tension and release. Beautiful drinking."

"Pinot noir from the close-planted vines (8300 per hectare) at Lowestoft planted in 1986; matured in French oak (35% new) for 10 months. Pure red plum and dark cherry fruits strut their stuff here with hints of five-spice, sous bois, dried raspberry, cranberry, black tea and vanilla, with light roast game further in the distance. Savoury and true with excellent fruit depth and purity, chalky tannins providing support. I'd expect this to cellar admirably."
