The Jewel in WA's Crown - Spotlight on Margaret River

by Hugh French | Oct 05, 2023

Spotlight - Margaret River

Margaret River, which was first planted to vines in the late 1960s, has since evolved into one of Australia's premier regions. A visionary group of pioneers recognised the region's potential for grape cultivation and experimented with planting various varieties. Eventually, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon would find their ideal conditions here, paving the way for the region's transformation into a world renowned wine producing area. This week we have a fantastic offer with current and back vintage releases from producers including Cullen, Leeuwin Estate, Moss Wood and Voyager Estate, all on special pricing.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or call us on 03 9419 6990.

Cloudburst

"American Will Berliner seems more and more comfortable in his adopted Margaret River, despite his assertion that "this was a ‘fell-into’ thing.” His tiny four or five acres of vineyards are all farmed organically and essentially by hand. When he can find reliable help, one of the main chores is pulling weeds among his close-planted, almost bonsai-like vines. He planted the first vines in 2005, but the process continues today, as he continually fills gaps in the vineyard."

Cullen Wines

Cullen Wines is one of the aforementioned pioneers of Margaret River winemaking and has consistently produced long-lived wines in a highly individual style from their mature estate vineyards. The vineyards have progressed beyond organic to biodynamic certification and Cullen has also become the first vineyard and winery in Australia to be certified carbon neutral. Winemaking is now in the hands of Vanya Cullen, the daughter of the founders, Kevin John and Diana Madeline Cullen, who possesses a perfect palate and generosity to the cause of fine wine.

Leeuwin Estate

"Leeuwin Estate was one of the first Margaret River wineries to put the region on the international wine map thanks to their iconic 1987 Chardonnay Art Series. The winery’s success was a long time coming, the Horgans having bought the property back in 1969. A chance meeting with Robert Mondavi soon after in 1972, convinced the Horgans to plant a vineyard with Mondavi consulting for some years after. The Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series was for many years Margaret River’s leading Chardonnay and remains a local benchmark, although today it faces much stiffer competition. The real movers at Leeuwin Estate in recent years have been the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series which show this winery is no one trick pony."

Moss Wood

"Margaret River stalwart Moss Wood was planted by Bill and Sandra Pannell in 1969 on gravelly loam soils over a bed of clay in Wilyabrup. The property was then purchased by Clare and Ketih Mugford in 1985 after both had worked with the Pannells, Keith as the winemaker. Additional Ribbon Vale vineyards were acquired in 2000 which are now bottled separately. The Mugfords have always happily charted their own course, and continue to bottle Margaret River Semillon and Pinot Noir as stand alone wines, one of the few wineries to do so. While the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, still made to this day with fruit from the original vineyard, has always been a highlight, recent years have also seen increasing sophistication in their Chardonnay. The Ribbon Vale wines, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, are also coming into their own."

Voyager Estate

"Voyager Estate is a second generation family-owned estate in Stevens Valley, Margaret River, Western Australia. Established in 1978, our heritage vines reflect the unique qualities of the Stevens Valley, with its undulating slopes, warm summers and cooling maritime breezes. Our ultimate ambition couldn’t be simpler – to craft wines that do justice to our extraordinary climate and soils through some of the most elegant and balanced Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons in the world. We’re proud to have harvested our first Certified Organic grapes in 2020, with the rest of our vines rolling into Certified Organic over the next 3 years. Through our continued focus on sustainability, craft and innovation, we aim to shine a light on Margaret River – one of the world’s great wine regions – and our special place in it. Voyager Estate has now achieved full Australian Certified Organic status."
