2023 marks an incredible milestone for Wantirna Estate and the Egan family. It's 60 years since the first vines were planted and a legacy was born. Reg planted the famous vineyard in 1963 on an east facing slope ensuring optimal growing conditions. The Egans were always aware that the suburbs would start to sprawl and eventually potentially overtake the vineyard but luckily the vineyard remains and consistently produces some of Australia's most special and sought-after wines.
Always in minute quantities - only4 barrels of Isabella Chardonnay were made in 2022. The 2021 vintage yielded 5 barrels of Lily Pinot Noir, 5 barrels of Amelia Cabernet Merlot and only 1 barrel of Hannah Cabernet Franc Merlot (289 bottles!)
These wines have already sold out at the winery and won't last long here either.

2022 Isabella Chardonnay

"So much flavour, and yet it still keeps itself fine and balanced. I’m thinking peach and pear, lime leaf, sweet spices and vanilla, a little salty oatmeal under that. It’s fleshy, ripe Chardonnay flavour with a savoury oatmeal and nutty nougat character, balanced acidity, a slight pithy grapefruit grip and bitterness, gently chalky too, with a long saline finish. So lovely. Another year to settle into bottle, and then likely even more lovely again."

2021 Lily Pinot Noir

"Poached strawberry, cherry, a musky and rosy perfume, spicy woody top notes, slightly bloody/earthy too. It’s medium-bodied, but it’s also a firm and savoury wine, a little orange peel in with cedar and rhubarb, and I like the way the tannin is etched through – you can really feel it – and there’s a firm toasty finish of excellent length. It’s typical house/vineyard style here, though maybe a little more finely wrought than is usual. Very good. A few more years cellaring would be ideal."

2021 Amelia Cabernet Merlot

"Blackcurrant, dark raspberry, chocolate, a little violet, pencils and spicy wood, pimento, and also, for me, a correct varietal leafy/tobacco top note. It’s medium-bodied, very dense and really quite ‘mineral’ and graphite laden, with a firm core of bright acidity, deep gravelly tannin, with a lively yet dark chocolaty finish of super length. This is a good one."

2021 Hannah Cabernet Franc Merlot

"The beauty of the later ripening varieties such as these is that during the critical evolution to full ripeness, the autumn like weather has begun. This gives them warm sunny days but those beautiful cool to almost cold nights. Wonderful ripening temperatures. The berries can hang on the vines, not getting so much more sugar ripe necessarily, but allowing those soft yet grainy tannins to develop. Tannins really make the backbone of these wines. The wine is in 100% new French oak, and has been bottle aged for 18months before release. The fruit is superb, the oak and grape tannins are integrated and it is just a rather delicious blend of grapes."
