Hofgut Falkenstein - More Success in 2022

by Hugh French | Oct 18, 2023

Hofgut Falkenstein

"13ha of mainly old Riesling vines in a side valley of the Saar known as Tälchen"

"2022 is another success story for Hofgut Falkenstein. The wines all stand out for their clarity, complexity, and precision. Concentration and depth bring density to the wines, making them shine. They completely mask the softness and roundness often found in the 2022 vintage. To list all the great wines would be to include virtually all of them. But if we had to give our preferences, we would list Ober Schäfershaus Spätlese Trocken, Herrenberg Kabinett Feinherb Onkel Peter, Herrenberg Spätlese Feinherb Meyer Nepal, Euchariusberg Kabinett Alte Reben Gisela and Euchariusberg Auslese Förster.”

2022 Riesling Herrenberg Kabinett Feinherb
Usually $67 - Special Offer $63

"The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Herbert (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) is an off-dry wine made from fruit harvested in the Kasselsheidchen part of the vineyard situated high up the slope. It offers a very elegant and pure nose of white and yellow fruits, jasmine, lavender, violet, and pear. The wine is delicately refined and juicy on the fruity and fresh palate. However, the finish is superbly fresh and clean with animating zest, giving it a dryish feel."

2022 Riesling Herrenberg Spatlese Feinherb
Usually $77- Special Offer $73

"The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste."

2022 Riesling Euchariusberg Kabinett
Usually $75 - Special Offer $71

"The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Kugel Peter (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was harvested on 50-year-old from partially un-grafted vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, which was classified in the highest category on the old taxation maps, and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It shows abeautifully fresh and finely aromatic nose of spices, gooseberry, cassis, rote redcurrant, herbal tea, and lime. The wine is beautifully playful and stillcompact on the palate, as the juicy elements of yellow fruits are wrapped into bright and lively juicy acidity. The finish is vibrating and superbly energetic. What a great Kabinett!"

"The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese Klaus (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from fruit harvested on 60-year-old vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. Still very reductive at first and herbal at first, this needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal a superbly attractive and fresh nose of minty herbs, aniseed, elderflower, Conference pear, and mustard seeds. The wine is superbly juicy and mouth-coating on the layered and spicy palate. The finish is layered and finely aromatic. This is a beautiful Spätlese."

This offers a beautifully fresh and magnificently herbal and spicy nose of candied lime, grapefruit zest, redcurrant, violet, fresh almond, and greengage. The wine is superbly packed into great ripe and juicy acidity. The finish is beautifully tangy and playful. What a great Kabinett!"

It offers a fresh and delicately floral nose of bright white and yellow fruits, candied grapefruit, may tree, cassis, and smoke. 2022 Riesling Ockfener Bockstein Kabinett Alte Reben
Usually $124 - Special Offer $117

"The 2022er Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben Mia (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) is made from fruit harvested on old vines planted in the 1960s and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. Still slightly reductive at first, this needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal complex and fresh nose of minty herbs, herbal tea, spices, white peach, and lime tree. The wine is superbly playful and energetic on the zesty and pure palate. There is lightness as in a fresh mountain water wrapped into beautiful spicy and salty finish. The after-taste is already off-dry to dryish in style rather than fully fruity. This is a grand Kabinett."
