These new and not-quite-as-new Barossa producers are making some fascinating Shiraz. This is not Barossa Shiraz as you know it. These are lower-alcohol, elegant, lifted wines of depth inspired by the great Rhone producers.
Leading the way is the second vintage from Samantha Chandra of Setiono, made in tiny volumes from two superb vineyards with incredible results. A producer to get a taste of while you can.
Then on to Callum Powell at Agricola. Callum's education included a stint learning from the great Jean-Louis Chave in Hermitage. His 2022 Flaxman received a 97-point rating from Mike Bennie of The Winefront saying "It’s spicy, it’s heady in perfume, it’s magnificent in the way it lays out all that is possible from Shiraz".
This New Barossa offer would not be complete without the Sami-Odi. Fraser McKinley's wines attract a cult-like following for good reason. He may not have started the movement, but he certainly is at the top, making his wines extremely difficult to uncover.
