by Hugh French | Feb 08, 2024

Cesar Marquez

"Cesar Marquez Perez, Raul Perez's nephew, has consolidated himself as one of the most precise winemakers in Bierzo..."
Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Companion

More and more we're seeing fantastic Spanish wine made by young, driven winemakers reach our shores. New to us and Australia are the wines of Cesar Marquez whose family has been making wine in Bierzo since 1752. Currently, Cesar is at the helm of his family's estate, Castro Ventosa, while also making wine under his eponymous label.

Thanks to his family's deep roots in the region, Cesar has access to some of the best vineyards in the area. He uses ancient vines to create wines of Bierzo that transcend expectations. Precisely crafted, these wines offer superb quality and sophistication. We're enormously excited to have these in and share them with you all. Don't miss out!

2021 Bierzo 'La Salvacion' Godello Centenario
Usually $59 - Special Offer $52

"The spectacular white Godello 2021 La Salvacion was produced with grapes from a one-hectare centenary plot in Arganza, the northernmost and cooler village in Bierzo, a plot that was regrafted from Mencia some 17 years ago. The destemmed grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press, and the juice fermented in 500-liter oak barrels after setting for 24 hours. It matured in those barrels for one year, with the lees but without bâtonnage. It has 12.56% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, consistent with a cold year, with an expressive nose of dry flowers and pollen, aromatic and showy, open and clean, very precise and pure. It has less alcohol than the previous year, with a super fresh palate."

2021 Bierzo 'El Val' Blanco
Usually $249 - Special Offer $235

"The new white 2021 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille—the same place as a new white for the family firm Castro Ventosa—with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 12.48% alcohol, very good parameters for acidity and freshness and a consistent sensation on the palate. It's from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 11 months. It's super elegant, very clean, precise, symmetric and delineated, transparent, harmonious and elegant, like a grand cru Burgundy. Bravo! The price is high, reflecting scarcity but also quality. It transcends the appellation and the variety. Only 521 bottles were produced."

2021 Bierzo 'Parajes del Bierzo' Mencia
Usually $42 - Special Offer $37

"The super affordable 2021 Parajes really overdelivers in this cool year. It was produced with grapes from up to 45 different plots in nine villages, trying to capture the essence of Bierzo. This regional red mixes soils and altitudes, mostly very old plots and therefore planted with a field blend with a majority of Mencía but also around 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% whites or other reds like Bastardo, Souson or Estaladina. It fermented by plot in stainless steel and plastic bins with some full clusters, indigenous yeasts and variable macerations, ranging between 15 and 60 days. Seventy-five percent of the volume matured in 225-, 400- and 500-liter barrels and the rest in a 5,000-liter oak foudre. It's aromatic, floral, perfumed and elegant, with a medium-bodied palate and very fine tannins. It is round and juicy, with very fine tannins and depth and complexity, corresponding to a much more expensive wine. A bargain. He harvested quite early in 2021, and the wines have moderate alcohol."

2021 Bierzo 'Valtuille' Mencia
Usually $59 - Special Offer $52

"The 2021 Valtuille Vino de Villa is his village wine that has replaced his old Las Firmas starting in 2019. For this, he selects plots of old vines with a field blend of Mencia with some 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% whites and other reds on sandy soils that tend to produce finer and more elegant wines. It fermented by plot in 1,000-liter vats with some full clusters and different macerations, ranging between 15 to 60 days. It matured in 500-liter oak barrels. The grapes were picked quite early, and all the wines have below 13% alcohol and very fine and elegant tannins, the signature of the cooler year."

2021 Bierzo 'El Rapolao' Mencia
Usually $92 - Special Offer $82

"Marquez's version of El Rapolao in 2021, the 2021 El Rapolao is from the coldest part of the village where the soils are rich in iron and organic matter, and it was micro-fermented by plot in small 1,000-liter vats with a maceration of 17 days and an elevage in used 500-liter oak barrels. It has 12.81% alcohol and nice balance with freshness and acidity coupled with fine tannins. It's super elegant, with lots of finesse, very harmonious, floral and perfumed. It has an austere mouthfeel and is nicely textured, with very fine, chalky tannins. It's more relaxed than previous vintages, when the wine felt tighter."

2021 Bierzo 'Pico Ferreira' Mencia
Usually $92 - Special Offer $82

"The super elegant and fresh 2021 Pico Ferreira comes from northeast-facing ancient vines in the village of Corullon on shallow slate soils that deliver small bunches. Each of the plots fermented separately with their own yeasts with 50% full clusters and 45 days of maceration, and the wine matured in a combination of 500- and 600-liter oak barrels for around one year. It has a harmonious and elegant palate with 12.92% alcohol and fine-grained tannins. It is serious, with tension and the stony feeling from the slate soils. This has more depth and complexity than the 2020—more serious."

2021 Bierzo 'Sufreiral' Mencia
Usually $92 - Special Offer $82

"A particular favorite of mine, the 2021 Sufreiral comes from one of the few limestone-based soils in Bierzo, in the village of Toral de los Vados, the other, southwest-facing side of Pico Ferreira. It fermented in 1,000-liter vats, as he has different small plots that are vinified separately, with some 35% full clusters and indigenous yeasts (like all his wines). It matured in 500- and 600-liter oak barrels for 12 months. The wine has a moderate 12.73% alcohol and very good and integrated acidity. It has chalky minerality, great elegance, a tender palate with very fine tannins and a super tasty, almost salty finish. This is open, delicate and amazingly elegant..."
