Artuke
Artuke is a small, terroir-focused winery based in the small town of Baños de Ebro in the Rioja Alavesa. Owned and run by brothers Arturo and Kike, Artuke only uses grapes from their vineyards which are tucked under the Sierra Cantabria on the northern edges of Rioja.
Artuke makes vibrant wines expressive of the village, uncluttered by oak, extraction, or other artifice. The brothers farm organically and their elevated, cool-climate vineyards produce wonderfully bright versions of Rioja.
Artuke has again earned acclaimwith their 2021 Rioja 'La Condenada' achieving a rare perfect score of 100 points from Tim Atkins MW in the 2024 Rioja Report.

2021 Rioja 'Trascuevas' Blanco

"The first white I tasted from Artuke is the 2021 Trascuevas Blanco, a blend of 90% Viura with 5% each Malvasía Riojana and Palomino Fino from three vineyards in the villages of Baños de Ebro, Samaniego and Ábalos. The clusters were pressed, and the juice fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in similar proportions in 600-liter oak foudres and concrete tanks for 11 months. It's expressive, clean and balanced, modern but with clear Rioja typicity, a little balsamic and spicy. It's serious, very balanced and fresh, super tasty and with a chalky sensation in the finish."

2021 Rioja 'Finca de los Locos'

"The single-vineyard 2021 Finca de Los Locos comes from a plot in Baños de Ebro on a terrace from the Ebro River planted in 1981 on sandy and gravel soils. It's 75% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 5% Viura with 13.8% alcohol and a pH of 3.38, denoting very good freshness. Starting with this vintage, the wine is certified organic. It matured in 3,500-liter oak vats for one year. It feels harmonious, powerful and elegant with an expressive nose of flowers, wild berries and herbs and a touch of licorice. It's medium to full-bodied and beautifully textured, with very fine and elegant tannins."

2021 Rioja 'Paso las Manas'

"The 2021 Paso Las Mañas was produced with grapes from a vineyard in the village of Samaniego at 700 meters above sea level. The plot was planted in 1990 and 2013 on limestone and rocky soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 3,500-liter oak foudre for 12 months. It has an explosive nose of raspberries, high pitched and showy, aromatic, open and expressive. It has a moderate 13.6% alcohol and a pH of 3.4, terrific balance and very fine tannins."

2021 Rioja 'El Escolladero'

"El Escolladero is a vineyard planted in 1950 in the village of Ábalos at 660 meters in altitude. As with most reds, I tasted two vintages of it, 2021 and 2022. The 2021 El Escolladero, produced with 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from the 0.96 hectares of vines, fermented with uncrushed grapes and matured in 600-liter oak foudres. It has the aromatic finesse of the 2021s, elegant, open, expressive, very clean, transparent and focused. The palate is beautifully textured, with very fine and elegant tannins and great freshness."
