Quality in the Face of Adversity

by Hugh French | Apr 04, 2024

2021 will go down in the history books as one of the most challenging vintages Burgundy has had to endure. The massive frost event in April brought us incredible images of smudge pots in the vineyards but also devastated the growers' yields for both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The cool temperatures that persisted made the ability to ripen the remaining grapes doubtful. Fortunately, the warmer temperatures towards the end of the growing season allowed the grapes to ripen.

What has resulted is wine that, when made by the hands of quality producers, exhibits immense tension and precision, transparency, and zoom in on terroir characteristics in microscopic detail.

Two such quality producers are Domaine Bruno Colin and Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils, and we are delighted to offer a selection of their 2021 vintage white burgundies, listed below.

Domaine Bruno Colin

"Michel Colin was the third generation in his family to grow grapes in Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Beaune. When he retired in 2003, he handed the property over to his sons, Philippe and Bruno, who split the holdings between them to bottle under separate labels. With the help of his wife, Stéphanie, Bruno farms eight hectares of land, in thirty different parcels scattered over five communes, with sometimes as little as just a few rows per parcel. To farm under these circumstances is quintessentially Burgundian, where the old Napoleonic codes of inheritance (evolved from Roman law) divide property equally among offspring. Parcels farmed by any one family continue to get smaller and smaller as they are distributed among relatives."
Importer Notes

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet
Usually $209 - Special Offer $199

"Outstanding. Ripe and fresh aromas include those of rosemary oil, petrol and just sliced pear and apple. The succulent and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors flash focused power on the rustic but impressively long finale. This is really quite good for what it is and worth considering."
89-91 Points

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Chaumees'
Usually $299 - Special Offer $284

"Outstanding. This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and here it's enough to overshadow everything but discreet citrus wisps. There is both more volume and more refinement to the beguilingly textured medium weight flavors that possess a gorgeous mouthfeel and particularly on the balanced, complex and lingering finish. This is already quite lovely and should only improve with bottle aging."
91-93 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Morgeot'
Usually $309 - Special Offer $294

"Outstanding. Reduction again masks the fruit. Otherwise, there is even better density and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that are notably less refined though they are more muscular and particularly so on the robust and borderline rustic finale."
90-93 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'La Truffiere'
Usually $479 - Special Offer $459

"Outstanding. A spicier nose freely offers up a combination of green apple, plenty of floral influence and a whiff of citrus confit. The super-sleek, intense and beautifully detailed medium weight flavors exude ample minerality on the balanced bitter lemon-inflected finale. This could use better depth but the innate class of a fine Truffière is clearly on display."
91-94 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Bouchard Pere & Fils

Renowned and respected as one of the finest producers in Burgundy, Bouchard Père et Fils has truly become an institution, known for the exceptional quality of their wines and the diversity of its many vineyards.

Founded in 1731,Bouchard Père et Fils has built up an estate of 130ha and, collectively, is the largest owner of Grand Crus (12ha) and Premier Crus (74ha) across the Côte d’Or. Bouchard represents almost one hundred ‘climats’ or uniquely diverse vineyards, including prestigious monopoles and premium sites.

2021 Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Genevrieres'
Usually $319 - Special Offer $299

"Outstanding. Equally cool and more elegant aromas are comprised by notes of exotic jasmine tea, a range of floral elements and a whiff of mineral reduction. The almost painfully intense and stonier middleweight flavors aren't as powerful, but they are clearly finer while delivering excellent length on the linear, balanced and moderately austere finale. This beauty will need at least a few years of keeping to develop more overall depth."

2021 Meursault 1er Cru 'Perrieres'
Usually $379 - Special Offer $359

"Sweet Spot, Outstanding. This is aromatically similar to the Charmes though with a broader array of floral elements. There is almost painful intensity to the laser-like middleweight flavors that terminate in a chiseled, bone-dry and moderately austere finish that is like rolling small stones around the mouth. This is also very much built-to-age and as excellent as it is, it's not likely to make for especially interesting drinking young as it's very compact."
92-95 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Usually $669 - Special Offer $625

"Sweet Spot. There are vague Chablis-like elements on the nose of green apple, petrol, just sliced citrus, iodine and quinine. The rich, dense and exceptionally powerful big-bodied flavors manage to retain a certain refinement while delivering superb length on the balanced, bone-dry and stony finish. This moderately austere effort is also seriously good and has the structure to repay 12 to 15 years of keeping. In a word, excellent."
93-95 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Usually $1,449 - Special Offer $1,349

"An exuberantly floral-suffused nose is both elegant and airy with its array of cool and restrained apple, pear, spice and mandarin orange scents. The broad-shouldered flavors are dense to the point of opulence while also retaining the hallmark refinement while delivering first-rate length on the succulent, sappy, balanced and chalky finish. This is quite rich and sufficiently forward that it may actually be approachable young. With that said, it could use more depth so at least some cellaring should prove beneficial."
92-94 Points
Allen Meadows, Burghound

2021 Le Montrachet Grand Cru
Usually $2,999 - Special Offer $2,700

"Don't Miss! Reluctant if broad-ranging aromas include those of petrol, floral, spice, white orchard fruit, especially white peach, exotic tea and a suggestion of oak. The dense and powerful yet caressing large-scaled flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while displaying stunningly good length on the balanced, youthfully austere and compact finale. This is definitely built-to-age but the mid-palate density is so good that the 2021 Montrachet should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of keeping."
93-96 Points
