Moss Wood - One of Australia's Great Cabernets

by Hugh French | May 13, 2024

Moss Wood

Moss Wood is a legendary name in the Australian wine industry and a standout in the Margaret River region. Clare and Keith Mugford have been taking care of these vines for over 40 years, and their wines have earned high praise from some of the best wine critics in the world.

The latest release from the cooler 2021 vintage, the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, is now available. This vintage was a challenging one for many winemakers in Margaret River, but the Mugfords persevered through the difficulties and put in a lot of hard work in the vineyard to ensure the highest quality fruit was harvested. As is often the case with tough vintages, the best producers shine through and craft exceptional wines.

Aside from the 2021 release, we also have an excellent selection of rare back vintage wines from our cellar available in limited quantities. Act fast to secure yours today.

2021 Cabernet Sauvignon
Usually $155 - Special Offer $144

"One of Australia’s great cabernets. This from a cooler season highlights and accentuates the typical bright red fruits and blue fruit mix, especially on the nose. It’s aromatic and perfumed with an African violet scent. The palate as always is so exquisitely balanced and refined. Since 1989 the cabernet has been augmented with the floral bright fruit of cabernet franc and the darker robust black fruits of petit verdot. The palate delivers with a gentle restraint yet there is power deep within. The chalky tannins define a long and focussed finish. A deceptive medium bodied wine that will cellar for many years."

2020 Cabernet Sauvignon
Usually $149 - Special Offer $139

"Another simply sublime edition of this great wine. The volume of fruit was down almost 60% but the small berry influence has added even more intensity and depth, if that is possible with this wine. Interesting point of difference is that the combination is slightly different from previous vintages with 90% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 7% petit verdot. The petit verdot certainly brings a darker berry influence with slightly firmer tannins. The aromas are a seductively perfumed with a combination of violet and redcurrant with a subtle black olive and mulberry. But the palate, oh the palate, is simply a joy. Smooth graceful lines with fine chalky tannins supply essential definition and support and harmoniously played oak. At the moment it is quite restrained but with age, a treasure trove of delights will be released. It is a wine destined for even greater things. Extraordinary."

"96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar."
