Luciano Sandrone - Perfect 100 Point Barolo

by Hugh French | Jun 12, 2024

Luciano Sandrone

"I consider Luciano Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis to be one of a handful of benchmark wines for the region, well worth the effort of finding and cellaring.

Sandrone is one the most meticulous producers I have ever met. He tends to his vineyards and winery with extraordinary passion and precision."
Antonio Galloni, Vinous

When discussing influential winemakers in Barolo, it's impossible to overlook Luciano Sandrone. Without any inherited vines, Luciano and his wife Mariuccia purchased their first holdings of Cannubi Boschis in 1978. From these humble beginnings, the pair set out to craft age-worthy wines of purity with an approachable nature. Succeeding in this endeavour, he and a handful of his contemporaries elevated Barolo wines to the world stage, gaining them the renown they hold today.

Earlier this week, we had the honour of hosting a small group at Bar Rosella for dinner with Barbara Sandrone. The event was truly amazing, and all the wines showed extremely well. The standout of the night was the 2017 Barolo 'Vite Talin'. This exceptional wine impressed everyone and also caught the attention of renowned critic Antonio Galloni, who awarded it a perfect 100-point score.

2022 Dolcetto d'Alba DOC
Usually $50 - Special Offer $46

"The 2022 Dolcetto d'Alba is a soft, fruity delicate wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Floral top notes lend freshness. In 2022, the Sandrone Dolcetto is on the lighter side."
89 Points
Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

2021 Barbera d'Alba DOC
Usually $85 - Special Offer $79

"Starting with thick concentration and inky darkness, the Luciano Sandrone 2021 Barbera d'Alba has cooked fruit aromas and some savory tones too, such as leather, spice and a hint of dusty licorice root. The style is big, and this wine is conventional with big juicy sensations. It's all very elaborate for a Barbera d'Alba, but we are talking about a vintage that naturally delivers extra concentration."
93 Points
Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2021 Nebbiolo d'Alba 'Valmaggiore' DOC
Usually $99 - Special Offer $92

"The 2021 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is a serious, serious wine that needs time in the cellar to be at its best. It shows the lighter style of Nebbiolo from Roero, but with all the elements dialed up. I especially admire its mid-palate depth and overall resonance. Succulent red cherry, white pepper, cedar, mint and orange peel all take shape in this super-expressive Barolo."
94 Points
Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba 'Valmaggiore' Sibi et Paucis DOC
Usually $135 - Special Offer $125

"Lustrous ruby. Saline, minerally notes with just a suggestion of savoury oak. Supple and with lots of juice and crunch on the finish. You’d never guess this is five years old and from a hot vintage. Hedonistic and animating."
17+/20 Points
Walter Speller, Jancisrobinson.com

2019 Barolo 'Le Vigne' DOCG
Usually $279 - Special Offer $259

"The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time."
97 Points
Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

2013 Barolo 'Le Vigne' Sibi et Paucis DOCG
Usually $399 - Special Offer $379

"The 2013 Barolo Le Vigne Sibi et Paucis, the Sandrone library release of the 2013, is an infant. That's the good news. Even better, it is developing at a snails' pace. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white flowers and white pepper lend brightness. Readers will have to be patient though, as the 2013 is nowhere near ready to drink. Those who are fortunate to own it should be thrilled. Magnificent."
98 Points
Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

2019 Barolo 'Aleste' DOCG
Usually $319 - Special Offer $299

"The 2019 Barolo Aleste is another stellar wine from Sandrone. Like Le Vigne, the Aleste is a tightly wound ball of energy. Dark cherry, mocha, plum, licorice and lavender all race across the palate. This racy, but youthfully austere Barolo has a ton to offer. There's more density and a darker profile than in the Le Vigne, sort of like a soloist to Le Vigne's orchestra."
97 Points
Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

2013 Barolo 'Aleste' Sibi et Paucis DOCG
Usually $429 - Special Offer $409

"Past vintages of this wine report the name of the MGA (Cannubi Boschi), but from this point on, the wine is called Aleste. This is a late-release project with bottles that are held back in a brick-lined room for an additional 10 years of bottle age. The Luciano Sandrone 2013 Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis is a true classic. The wine still shows hints of its primary fruit, but it has otherwise moved into an exciting phase of its evolution. There is dried spice, campfire ash, licorice and truffle essence. The flavors trigger your mouth to salivate, and the tannins feel like silk."
98 Points
Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2017 Barolo 'Vite Talin' DOCG
Usually $1,199 - Special Offer $1,149

"The 2017 Barolo Vite Talin is a total stunner. Dark, rich and sensual, the Vite Talin captures all of the natural richness of the heavily virused, low-yielding clone the Sandrone family propagated in their parcels within Le Coste and Rivasi, both in Barolo. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and kirsch are all dialed up in this explosive, heady Barolo. The 2017 is just next-level wine. Superb."
