Domaine Gerard Mugneret
"Pascal Mugneret has discretely made Domaine Gérard Mugneret one of the most sought-after producers in Vosne-Romanée. At present, he occupies that liminal point where he is well known and respected, but does not attract the obsessive following or price speculation of its blue chip names. How long that will last is another question and I am probably not helping by proclaiming just how good these wines are."

Quietly going about his business, Pascal Mugneret has continued to build Domaine Gerard Mugneret into one of Burgundy's most well-respected producers. While the fanatical followers are yet to come, they can't be far away. Lauded for his fastidious work in the vineyard, Pascal pays close attention to the health of his soils and has been employing biodynamic conventions for over a decade. The resulting wines are astounding. They're elegant and express an almost distillate-like intensity of the Cote de Nuits terroir.

"4.5 barrels made instead of 12. Mid purple, quite a fresh nose, borderline volatile. Gamay to the fore, red cherries, a clear white pepper note behind, but does not finish too vegetal, as the fruit returns."

"A more deeply pitched nose freely expresses its array of sandalwood, dark currant, spiced plum and exotic jasmine tea, all of which is trimmed in discreet wood influence. The rich, concentrated and generously proportioned flavors possess a highly seductive texture while displaying fine depth and persistence on the balanced finale where the supporting tannins make their presence known."

"Pretty light to medium purple. Not too extrovert by any means but there is plenty of fruit nonetheless with an admirable purity. An impressive density in the middle, this does not dip down as many Suchots do, but then Pascal has some of the best placed vines. Much more arrives after spitting, this is exceptionally persistent and the fruit is all over any pepper or tannin. Brilliant delicacy yet with tensile strength."

"The expressive nose conveys instantly that the aromas could be from nowhere other than Vosne with its cool and pure combination of red and dark berries, Asian-style spices, especially star anise, sandalwood and impressive array of floral elements. There is excellent richness and mid-palate density to the powerful, serious, stony and strikingly long finish that is supported by bright acidity and a firm core of ripe tannins. Extended patience will absolutely be required here. This too is warmly recommended."

"A super-fresh, cool and beautifully elegant nose combines notes of red cherry, rose petal, violet and an interesting hint of dried tangerine peel. The super-sleek, intense and delineated medium weight flavors also exude evident minerality on the dusty, compact and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is also going to need at least some patience, but the upside development potential is clearly present. Also recommended."

This is an excellent Ech that should amply repay extended keeping; indeed it's going to need at least 7 to 8 years first as it's quite tightly wound today."
