Woodlawn - Elite Tasmanian Single Vineyards

by Hugh French | Jul 29, 2024

Woodlawn

We were very lucky to have Ricky Evans up from Tasmania pop in to show us his new vintages of the Woodlawn Single Vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnays last week. Whilst this label is a newcomer in the scheme of things, you may already be somewhat familiar with Ricky's work at Two Tonne Tasmania. Indeed, Two Tonne's top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay cuvees, The Dog and Wolf, was comprised of these two single vineyards below.

To the vineyards:
Three Wishes Vineyard is situated just north of Hillwood on the eastern bank of the Tamar River. It is north-facing and protected from the bass straight. This sunny and warm site produces wines with a bit more fruit weight.

Waverley Vineyard - A previously derelict vineyard, Ricky took over management of this site in 2015 and has coaxed the vines back to health. Waverly is located just east of Launceston and is more influenced by the mountainous terrain around it than the Tamar River. A much cooler site, it produces wines of intense purity, albeit in tiny yields.

With supreme talent Ricky at the helm of these very special Tasmanian terroirs, the evolution of Woodlawn will be extremely exciting. These wines show incredible elegance, intensity, and typicity, and they've also shown that they deserve a position among Tasmania's elite.

2022 Three Wishes Vineyard Chardonnay
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"This bright, sunny microclimate produces a fuller style of Chardonnay, rich in expression and flavour while maintaining refreshing natural acidities to match the silky weight."
Distributor Notes

"Scintillating acid. Plenty of tightly bound white stone fruit, citrus pith and white blossom. A coastal, mineral salinity here only adds to the wine's intrigue. Delicious. Given the warmer site, it's broader across the palate than the Waverley Chardonnay but still holds exceptional poise and balance. Cellar or drink now; either way, you won't be disappointed."

2022 Waverley Vineyard Chardonnay
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"The cooler of the two Woodlawn chardonnay sites, Waverley is located just to the east of Launceston. It's a finer, tauter rendition of the grape variety. There's still the sea spray influence, but there's also the crispness of mountain air. White peach, nectarine and citrus with tones of fine spice, cut fennel, wildflowers, crushed stone, ozone and almond paste. There's an ache of umami on the palate, the most lovely porcelain acid line pulling the wine along and a finish with just a tint of meal to its form. Great drinking."

2022 Three Whishes Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"There are two clones of Pinot Noir in Three Wishes Vineyard. The unknown clones occupy most of the site, and a small portion of MV6 is also present. The MV6 at this site is very low-yielding and packs a heap of flavour and structure. Ricky upped the bunch component to 40% this year to “match the concentration from the low yields”... Old vines, low yields, and a cool, even year come together beautifully here."
Distributor Notes

"Wild dark cherry plays the opening gambit in the 2022 Three Wishes Vineyard Pinot Noir, followed by pleasing five-spice, cardamom, gentle stemmy herbaceousness and a wash of cooling minerality across the palate. With mouthwatering acidity coming to it's aid, velvety tannins prop up the flavour profile nicely to sinching it all in for a pleasingly balanced finale. Moreish."

2022 Waverley Vineyard Pinot Noir
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69

"Three clones of pinot were planted in this little vineyard, 114 & 115 make the majority of the harvest, and an unknown patch in the middle ripens much later. Super low yielding, it produces perfect, small bunches with heaps of flavour and natural acidity. 30% whole clusters in the ferment, this was pressed off nice and early to finish in barriques, a little bit of new oak, balance to second use. It spent 11 months in barrel, and is bottled without fining or filtration."
Producer Notes

"Cherry, undergrowth, soft alpine herbaceousness. It's well put together, with a hint of baking spice and cedar from some very judicious oak treatment. Tasting the two Pinot Noirs side by side is a very gratifying exercise. The Three Wishes is more along the fruit-forward lines, while the Waverley offers more on the savoury spectrum. Fascinating to see the differences between sites."
