Schmolzer and Brown Single Vineyard Release

by Hugh French | Aug 20, 2024

"Tessa Brown and Jeremy Schmolzer are a duo that should be stamped firmly into the consciousness of all fine wine lovers. Smarts, nous and grit combine to a great degree: Their work yielding amazing wines, and a vineyard, Thorley, that will become a landmark under their care."
Mike Bennie, Gourmet Traveler WINE

Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown

Beechworth has to be the most exciting wine-growing region in Australia at the moment. Following in the footsteps of renowned winemakers like Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda, a new wave of youthful, exceptionally talented, and dynamic vintners are carving a distinct identity by crafting exceptional wines in this region.

Tessa Brown and Jeremy Schmolzer are prime examples. They've taken a cleared hillside near Beechworth and transformed it into a cool-climate gem. Their wines are refined, well-balanced, and simply elegant. The pair's hard graft is truly on show here and we are very excited to offer you Tessa and Jeremy's latest single-vineyard release. Given a challenging, cool (even by their standards) 2022 vintage, the availability of these superb wines is incredibly scarce. Order now to make sure you don't miss out!

2022 Thorley Riesling

"Apple strudel (with the cinnamon, yes), some lime, some flowers. It’s juicy with some nutty and spicy flavours, a charming mouth-perfume, chalky and dusty texture, bright sappy acidity, a saline and savoury edge, with a lively tonic water finish of excellent length, and some richness. There’s a little bit of green mango stuff here too, like you get in those delicious Thai salads. I just thought I’d mention that, because this wine may go well with that sort of thing. Flavour and texture. Different to your average Australian Riesling, and very good in that way too."

2023 Thorley Chardonnay

Usually $62

Special Offer $54

"Fresh apricot, green mango, grapefruit and lime, spice, a bit more struck match here, and it’s quite exotic in a way, maybe even some lemongrass, and salt block. It’s tight, a bit savoury and wild with a gently smoky and flinty edge, quite some tang, a slight green olive in brine thing, yet there’s quite the burst of acidity and flavour running through its long and zesty finish. Mouth-watering and intense. Very specific, and very bloody good."

2022 Brunnen Chardonnay

Usually $62

Special Offer $54

"This is just lovely. So lovely. It’s bright and intense, but kind of refined and calm too. It offers plenty of almond meal, light spice, fennel, grapefruit, pear and white peach, some floral notes, with a chef’s kiss of flinty struck match, but not much. It’s juicy, has such energy and cool acidity, but also flavour, some creamy richness, and fine chalky grip on a finish of superb length. Beautiful wine. And, because I love almond, in fact, I’m mad for it, it really gets me in. Yes."

2022 Brunnen Pinot Noir
Usually $62

Special Offer $54

"Beechworth pinot noir shines in a tough, cool and wet vintage – impressive! Structure is a prime feature here together with cool-climate pinot fruit, racy and super bright, jumping in cherry and red berries, bramble, earth and autumnal, leafy aromatics. Leads to a deep walk in the woods with earth and undergrowth, dried herbs, red berries and briar before a long glide to the finish, wrapped tightly in fine tannin and brisk acid crunch."

2022 Thorley Syrah

Usually $62

Special Offer $54

"So good on so many levels. Delights the senses with its vision of a fragrant, elegant, spice-laced syrah showcasing the beauty of a leading cool-climate region. Complex in toasted spices, pepper, red cherry, plum, and briar running long across a smoothly textured, well-composed palate. Great balance. The cork with the words 'fidus in silvis silentibus' – faith in the silent forests – relates to the theories of Viktor Schaiberger, Austrian naturalist and philosopher."
