Since the early 20th century, the Barthod family has been producing Burgundy wines from Chambolle-Musigny. After marrying into the Noellat family, a well-known name in Côte d'Or viticulture, Gaston Barthod took full control of the family estate, Domaine Barthod-Noellat, in 1950, following his return from military service.
During the 1980s, Gaston's daughter, Ghislaine, began her journey in winemaking, learning about the vines and the cellar. By the mid-1990s, she had made significant changes in how the Domaine operated. She focused on meticulous care in both the cellar and vineyards, allowing the true purity of Chambolle to reveal itself in each wine. Under her leadership, Ghislaine established the Domaine's global reputation as one of the most consistent in Chambolle-Musigny.
Now, Ghislaine is passing the torch to the next generation, her son Clément Boillot. The transition from mother to son is well underway, and Clément is emerging as an outstanding vigneron. His dedication to spending substantial time in the vineyards while skillfully managing the cellar sets him apart. Clément is already leading several innovative projects in the vineyard, including the implementation of biodynamic practices and high trellising, as well as exploring the use of larger oak barrels and amphorae in the winery.
He is building on a remarkable foundation, supported by an exceptional set of Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru terroirs that have an average vine age of over 80 years. Combined with the impressive legacy established by his mother, Clément's energy and talent promise a brilliant future for the domaine.
William Kelley encapsulates this sentiment, describing their wines as "an exquisitely balanced, concentrated, and vibrant set that will delight Burgundy purists."
