In 2018, Sandro Mosele (formerly of Port Phillip Estate/Kooyong) and his team embarked on one of Australia's most ambitious wine projects in Balnarring, located in the Mornington Peninsula. Their vision was to create an ultra-high-density vineyard dedicated to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard features rows spaced just 1.2 meters apart, with vines planted only 0.75 meters apart, resulting in an extraordinary density of 11,111 vines per hectare—four times the typical density of a conventional Australian vineyard. Extensive geological mapping and careful planning were undertaken to optimise the vineyard layout, with no expense spared.

So, why is this significant? The goal of this meticulous planning is to limit the yield of each vine to a maximum of 300 grams of grapes. This approach aims to produce intensely characterful fruit with the ideal chemistry necessary for crafting wines with a strong structural foundation. The scrupulous attention to detail in the vineyard allows for relatively straightforward cellar work, involving minimal intervention and just a touch of oak aging.

The 2024 vintage marks the second release of these wines, serving as an impressive follow-up to the inaugural 2023 vintage. The wines are intense yet impeccably balanced, intricate without being overly complex, and drinkable upon release, while also possessing the structure to age gracefully for many years to come. One thing is certain: Elanto should be on the radar of any Australian wine enthusiast.

"A terrific follow up to the inaugural release, coming out with more weight and body. Mid-straw gold and bright. Floral and waxy with lemon, spiced stone fruit, brown spices and honeycomb – lots within yet definitely in the savoury spectrum. Fuller bodied, rich, almost al dente with its phenolics and layers of texture via creamy, nutty lees. It’s detailed yet supple, with a succulence thanks to the all-important uplifting acidity. Moreish and compelling."

"What a beguiling wine – only the second release and showing complexity far beyond its years. It’s certainly youthful and pretty with heady aromas of florals and autumn leaves with flavours of wild strawberries, dark cherries and pips, chinotto, Middle Eastern spices and some poached rhubarb, too. The medium-bodied palate is evenly poised, laden with filigree tannins (lots of them) and energising acidity; oak (25% new) completely integrated. This has depth, some grip, a little amaro bitterness on the finish and, of utmost importance, it will age but it’s oh-so pleasing to drink today."
