Firstly I’ll print my review exactly as I wrote it (tasting blind) in my tasting book: Very tight and fine. Reserved. Gravelly vanillin with pure, clean, dark fruit resting behind. Burnt, bitter, rubbery aftertaste. In need of several years to properly uncoil. Excellent structure and finesse on mid-level fruit. Very dry. Will see better days. Gets tighter and more focused the longer it’s opened. Violetty perfumes. Excellent breeding, but not quite an outstanding wine. Note: I was somewhat surprised when the wine’s identity was revealed, but on re-tasting, and factoring in the label’s history, I couldn’t find anything in my notes that should be changed.
Re-rated on day two: Essentially the same wine but the tannin structure is now showing its class, pulling through the wine like rope. A terrifically structured, medium-weight wine. It is outstanding, but just. Drink: 2013-2024.
